The Bible tells the stories of the history of Judaism (of the Jewish people) in the Old Testament; and of Christianity, of Jesus Christ, and his birth, his life, and most importantly, of his death and resurrection, in the New Testament. The whole Old Testament was really building the foundation for the coming of our Savior, Jesus. There were all manner of prophecies concerning Him and His life and death and resurrection in the Old Testament. So it really is the most important book you can ever read.

It's meant to scare you into giving the church your money, and not question why the whole dang thing makes no sense (related to science, which was a sin but isn't anymore), b/c if you do question why you're going to HE LL. Or they'll kill you like the scientist back in the early ages who believed in gravity and us no being the center of the universe. It's a fact the Earth is over 4.5billion years old with life dating back to 3.8billion years ago. But you'll go 2 he ll if you contemplate it or contradict "God". See you in nowhere
There are 66 books in the Bible and each has a purpose of its own. Some books have similar stories because they were written by different people about the same thing (Matthew, Mark and Luke for instance).
The meaning or purpose of the Bible is to provide guidance and instruction on how to live a fulfilling and happy life, despite the chaos that generations of people have done to bring us to the world as we know it.
Many people will say that God is the cause of degraded world we now live in, but i believe the world would be far more messed up if He wasnt in it all. I agree that you should get a bible as well, or if not, www.biblegateway.com has an online searchable one.
That depends on which sect of Christianity you are interested in. Protestants have 66 books, The 24 texts of the Hebrew Bible are divided into 39 books in Christian Old Testaments, and complete Christian Bibles range from the 66 books of the Protestant canon to the 81 books of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church Bible. So take your pick.
