Where are the best places to go for a summer vacation?

I am looking for some great vacation ideas for a summer trip. I don't want to spend a TON of money, so I want to stay in the US. Hopefully somewhere warm, sunny, and lots of things to do.

ROADTRIP! Figure out how long you want to be gone, get out a map and pick a route. Then look for some fun destinations on the way. You could make a week of touring wineries, B&Bs and quaint coastal towns, or hit a national park like the Grand Canyon or Yosemite!

DUDERANCH - Go City Slicker style and vacation on a Dude Ranch. http://www.duderanch.org/ Take a few extra days and check out the neighboring area (Montana, Colorado, Arizona) or cleanup at a spa before heading home.

Other ideas are the Chicago (Wrigley Field, Great Lakes!), spicy beach scene in Miama, Austin, and one of my favs (although not too cheap), NYC!

Cedar point is fun!! Or there's yellowstone. Just pick a state you want to visit, there's awesome stuff to do everywhere and you don't have to take out a second mortgage to do it!

Depends how far you want to travel and what your interest are.
Massachusetts is loaded with history and with fun things too do..Cape Cod and Boston are awesome places. The famous Swan Boat rides The awesome Boston Public Gardens.Hiking trails, the ocean and nice beaches, golfing, hiking, shops, museums for kids . Salem has the House of Seven Gables, cruises around the harbor, The Mayflower in Plymouth, The famous Gloucester Fisherman , where the Perfect Storm movie was made.and my favorite Rockport...a family resort town.
You need only to google different places to obtain ideas for your trip. If you do your homework well, you will have a great vacation.. Enjoy this lovely summer weather)

If you're in to roller coasters and enjoy being on the water, Cedar Point is the place for you! Plus there's so much to do around the Point...Cleveland, with the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is only about an hour from the Point, and mostly highway driving. The Football Hall of Fame in Canton is a little farther, but worth the trip. The Cleveland Zoo is fantastic, and a day spent at Put-In-Bay on Middle Bass Island (off Port Clinton) is fun. Toft's Ice Cream in Sandusky is a must-stop for some of the biggest, tastiest ice cream cones anywhere! Great little shops and places of interest, plus fishing charters and lake cruises, in Marblehead and Port Clinton, right on the lakeshore...and who knows...you might even see Lemmie, Lake Erie's Loch Ness monster :))

The Colorado Mountains--either the Flat tops or Taylor reservoir. You need 4-wheeled drive for the Flat Topps. There are Elk, Deer, Bear, Eagles , all kinds of fishing and many other animals. Taylor Reservoir has great fishing as well as cabins to rent. These are just two of hundreds in Colorado. The one other place I wanted to mention is the 4 corners area near Durango. Hope it helps. Very rugged but very beautiful.. Sorry another a great area is Moab, Utah with Arches Nat. Park. Many hotels around 4 corners and Moab. Hope it helps

Pidgeon Forge Tenn. has a lot of things to do and they even have a camp site to put a camper or RV in for the length of stay you plan. Options are many with entertainment: Mini race cars, panning for gems, Dinosaur museum, Dollywood,,Dixie Stampede, Several Outlet Centers, Country music at several places like Comedy Tonite. and Back to the Oldies and Elvis impersonator. You name it and there are loads of things to do...and of course the views are awesome. Go up the mountain and there is even an amusement park at the top. Too many things to mention besides the fact that Gatlinburg, Tn..is right next door.

Gulf Shores, Alabama! To save money stay anywhere from Foley to Fort Morgan. Within 20 minutes you are at the beach without beachfront prices. The public beach is $5.00 to park but you can stay all night. Everything is within walking distance.Waterville is a MUST for kids! $123.00 gets a family of 4 to all it has including rollercoaster & theme park minus the surfing but it is ALL DAY fun! Stop by the visitors station to get coupons for all things! The "Hangout" is a great place to eat & has all kinds of activities for the family like sand mountain to play in, live bands, & bubble machine for the kids to play in! We just got back this week & had a blast & spent under a $1,000 for a 3 bedroom 2 bath condo for a week, gas, eating, & the water park! The gas was almost as much as the condo!

Well from where I live, I took my son on a cartoon vacation. We went to Chester, IL (Home of Popeye), Metropolis, IL (Home of Superman), West Frankfort, IL (Western Town) and to Arcola, IL (Home of Raggedy Ann and Andy) and Arcola has Rock Home Gardens (Amish Country). I am a single mom and had to make the biggest bang for the buck, of course we drove.

The north shore of Lake Superior is the largest body of fresh water in the world. Travel along the shore from Duluth, MN to the Canadian border and experience this lake and the surrounding areas up close. You may never leave. Quaint towns, skilled artisan communities, neat restaurants, the best pie shops, locally caught and smoked fish, fabulous state parks and historic sites. Recreational opportunities abound - bike trails, kayaking trails on the big lake, hiking the national North Country trail, camping, and visiting the Boundary Waters Canoe area. Stay at historic lodges, vacation home/cabin rentals, resorts, or condo/townhouse options. ENJOY!

I love So. Dakota. The history, and beauty are wonderful. There's a Dinosaur Dig Museum, the Black Hills,Mt. Rushmore; close to Little Big Horn and Custer, and also the sacred Mountain to the Indians in northern Wyoming, Devil's Tower. The kids will have a good time.

If you have children and even if you don't I would definitely suggest Walt Disney World (all 4 parks) and Universal Orlando Resort in Orlando, Florida. It is easy to go to both of these resorts in one week and well worth the effort. Also, I suggest Disneyland (both parks-Disneyland and California Adventure which are right across from each other). Both parks are part of Disneyland and are the original Disney parks! In fact my family and I are leaving on the 17th to go to Disneyland again (we went there a couple of years ago). We have also been to WDW and Universal in Florida and California. To me it is the best vacation you can take. We will be driving there and stopping in Las Vegas for a couple of days/nights on the way home. Disney and Universal to me is the best bargain and best memory maker for everyone in your family, no matter their age. Take it all in and let yourself be a kid again! I hope everyone gets to go there at least once in their lives. Magical places!

Busch Gardens! The one in Virginia is the one I go to. Water country is about 10 minutes away from there also. If you want to take a break from all the rides Williamsburg is AMAZING. Thomas Jeffersons house Montecello is in that area too. Tons of history and excitment. It all depends on what you like to do.

Wrightsville NC, is great, Montana is great as is Moab Utah, if u'd be into white water rafting..running the rapids is a rush.
San Diego Ca is endless fun
or come and watch the St Louis Rams at mini camp, (if we have one) outside of Milwaukee Wisconsin. LOL (on the mini camp recommendation, not the great state of Wisconsin). the great Sen Paul Ryan hails from the great state of Wisconsin, as does Greta Van Sustren. so the state is not completely over run by far left liberals. more LOL

Alaska! There are about 20+ hours of daylight during Alaskan summers and the wildlife are out to play. People are fishing, hiking, and everyone, including locals, are making the most of the long days, which makes it almost feel like your vacation is longer than it is. Camping is an option (though watch for huge mosquitoes) and can be a great retreat for both romantic couples or large families. Hiking and enjoying the great outdoors is an inexpensive way to enjoy your time off. Tours to see glaciers and wildlife (whales, sea lions, etc) can be affordable depending on your selection, from which there are plenty to choose. I had a fantastic time with my boyfriend, and we were only there for a long weekend. A flight to and from California to Alaska was much cheaper than going to Hawaii, South America or Europe.
