Because people see no point in sending people to the moon or study places that the average person will ever see, they want their money to be spent on things that will more directly help them
People don't understand the importance of science and the advancement of space travel.Most people watch to much Hollywood and get NASA and movies confused and call it a joke.Government wise,spending our money on other countries is more important than our own advancements.
don't get me even started on the news channels
some people think we should fix the problems on earth before we go wandering around space

ppl that say nasa is a waste of money just need to look up at the dark skys it dosent end no wasting money in finding other planets that could half life form thats like stopping cancer reasearch

Good question. I am in awe of space and do see the need for exploration. But, in this economy, the billions of dollars spent on speculation and theories could be used elsewhere. Of course, you would have to consider that if NASA was shut down, NASA employees would all join the unemployment lines. You would also have to consider the trickle down problems, the suppliers of products and services to NASA throughout the US would also force more unemployment.
What Helix wrote is correct, people don't "get it". They don't understand what space exploration has done for their daily lives. We don't edify astronauts anymore, we're too busy worrying about who got Snooki pregnant.
Some people can not reconcile the advances in science that have come from the space program relative to it's cost. They just do not see the benefit ratio as justifiable.
Their opinions are just as valid as those on the other side.
I personally believe many beneficial discoveries, as well as many innovative and useful inventions and products have come from it.
Not to mention the advances in our understanding of our universe.
The space program has provided immense benefits to our society.
But, only my humble opinion......
Because we have children and homeless people starving on the street some where . But instead there spending billions on dollars on stuff that wont save a life. Just my opinion

Because no one GETS it... they don't understand that the space program is responsible for nearly ALL of the modern technology we enjoy today from microwave ovens to cell phones to GPS, to the computers we are all using right now. If it weren't for the space program, for the special technologies that had to be invented to make it possible, for the experiments done there that could not be done here on the Earth with all the interference of gravity and atmosphere and humidity etc etc that there are so many things we would not even have today ... but greedy people only want to give money to big oil companies that already make billions every year in profits.
People say NASA is waste of money, because by spending billions of taxpayers money they are not getting what they deserve. Money should be used for the sake of humanity and not for their destruction. All money invested in NASA projects is to terrorize the other countries and the world. It is just to show supremacy and nothing else.
It's simple. We have an anti American President who believes in a socialistic country. I know let's just let china take over space exploration. Maybe we can hitch a ride with them next time one of our satellites needs updated.
because people don't understand, that no matter what, the money is spent here, on earth, but the return on the money can be a weapon that is not needed or keeping a base in Europe to fight the evil empire which in the end perpetuates the control of those in power ....or create progress with new tech from space exploration

NASA not only explores space and launched much useful technology (satellite systems that let me communicate now! and computers with huge ability!), but spin-offs allow Big Brother to track you: to know what you say and your photo! Now gathered by technology for US & Israel; probably China, Russia also. There were great achievements, plus dangers in government run ventures like NASA. (Well, it grew out of NACA whose job was federal technology for air war!)
Similarly US govt advanced nuclear power (firstly for bombs!) and laser tech (now to blast thru thick steel [enemy ships in Hormuz?] possibly in 2012, reportedly.) So, most of deep science funded by US fed govt produces ability (of our Masters!) to control populations.
And NASA was costly, not very efficient. (Private firms launch space devices much cheaper now.) But it gave good jobs to highly qualified folks, plus others - affirmative action nowadays is toxic to efficient progress! (Russia & China not similarly burdened.)
Nasa is a private enterprise and its mandate is to keep the status quo oblivious to top secret intel including all your ufo and roswell conspiracies (not necessarily extraterrestrial) such as reverse engineering of nazi rockets etc. by the Paperclip scientists in the early 50's. Moreover one does not have to believe in conspiracy theories to find out that the charter of Nasa is one of private enterprise...the fact that people think its a government responsibility just exacerbates the negligence and lask of respect these people have when lying to american people that no taxes go into this program...that's why they stopped launching, preferable to have private agencies to foot the cost instead of the public purse and the resulting media and public scrutiny from the spending committees etc; hence once again the secrecy of the past. Remember, that Nasa really only came of age during the cold war, and we can only guess what sort of rocket launches those could have been.

why ? Instead of spending billion of dollar,exploring the universe. why not spend it on people'sbasic needs such as health care ,create new jobs so that people can have the ability to buy foods etc..and do you think if they even discover a new earth.do you think man is capable of learning from their mistake, will they make the same thing man has done on our planet
NASA is a waste of money in most people's opinions, because by now, the way technology advances, we should have land, to sea, to air, to space vehicles by now. -- Why are we sending people up into space is my question.. We know space has little adverse effect on men, female is still in question.. so why we still sending all male crews? -- Other then Female adverse effect testing, what are they spending money on.. Shouldn't all the money NASA gets be spent purely on theories to do with deep sleep and light speed travel? Not wasting money on sending people into space and having them live there when we already know the answers.
