How i know the bible is true?

Report as

People have ACTUAL proof, that the things that happened in the Bible are true. (:

What actual proof is there?
Report as
Really? I have yet to see any evidence for the flood or the exodus, they've even given up trying to find evidence for either.
Report as
No one has ever been able to disprove the bible. There have been many who have spent their lives trying. The bible wouldn't be around anymore if it was disproved.
Report as
But wouldn't it be a bit easier to actually prove that the events in the bible were true rather than trying to prove the opposite?

Adam and eve are not true, the flood is not true, the exodus is not true, hmmm. So what parts are true?
Report as
how can you prove they are not true, seedy?
Report as
A large part of the bible is history, and history is written by the survivors. The interesting part is, the exodus story was written by Egyptians as well, it just sounds very different, two different perspectives. The flood might have been more localized instead of the entire globe, because way back then when people talked about the world they meant the area they knew. And if you really read Genesis there were other people, when Cane left home he went to another city where he took a wife.

You should have read the history books back when I was a kid. They are more accurate now.
Report as
billythesweetkid
Look there are things that make it scientifically impossible. Think about that.
Report as
Lolo, they have tried to find evidence for the flood and the exodus and have yet to find any sort of evidence. They have found localized flooding, but we have that even today. And the only exodus the Egyptians wrote about was the expulsion of the Hyksos from Egypt.
Report as
Exactly, and some historians believe the Hyksos were the Jews. The stories are so different some say it is not true, but others look at the timing and believe it is the same story. Like a lot of ancient history we may never know.
Report as

billy, the point that things are scientifically impossible doesn't necessarily make them impossible to the Creator of all things(including science). You are looking strictly at what can be done by man not an all-powerful God.

You can either doubt, or trust that when Jesus said, "sanctify them in thy truth, Thy Word is truth," either he's right, or the doubters are. His credentials seem superior, but you can choose your group to follow.

Most people like myself believe in the Gospel of Jesus, but unfortunatly this Gospel is no where to be found.
Report as
So there isnt much I could do if I wanted to follow him.
Report as
This is mere intellectual subterfuge. Jesus said he would build his church and the gates of hell would not prevail against it. You would have me believe he was wrong and that the gates of hell prevailed. Sorry...
Report as
The point here is that Jesus did not write a single word in the entire NT and nor was a word a written during his lifetime. So we are left with books written long after he ascension. A lay man like myself have every reason to doubt the NT because
Report as
Nvm about the last line.
Report as
Ok, I get it. You got doubts.
Report as
Momo does not doubt. He denies. Many have sincerely shared (tried) with him plenty of evidence for the authenticity of the Gospels in the NT. Yet he denies it all. Strangely he absolutely holds to a belief in a book he says no longer exists. Which only proves that he has no clue what Christians mean when we use the term 'Gospel of Jesus Christ.' it is the message not the name of a book.

He also has a double standard. Muhammed's words were written by his followers in the oral tradition. But for some reason it is to be assumed to be totally accepted w/o the same critical view as the Bible. Then he will quote the Bible as if he believes it. Then the next time he will deny the Gospels in a vain attempt to refute truth.
He is a confused man.
Report as
If I may, I should add that Momo and I have had our share of disagreements, but I consider him a good person, an intellectual challenge, and often more informed than the average Muslim I meet.

Just off the top of my head - Archeologists have found a couple of cities they believe might be Sodom and Gomorra (hope I spelled that right) the names are different. Sodom does look like it might have been destroyed by fire. They have a few theories as to how it was destroyed but one is they think there might have been gas pockets under the city. It is from around the same time period.

The exodus story is found not only in the bible but a different version has been found in Egypt.
Report as
Please reference somewhere that says the Egyptian version of the exodus, I have yet to find any. The fact is they have pretty well given up on finding any.
Report as
I found it years ago on the internet. I could go out and research it again, but, then, so could you. I did NOT look for the word exodus, that is clue number 1. As I recall I was doing some research about Egypt during the time the Jews were living in the area. The first hurtle was figuring out when the Jews were there, there is still some controversy about that. I more or less stumbled across the story by accident. If you really are interested in the subject you will be willing to look. If you mind is made up then I guess you will not.
Report as
Although Egypt wouldn't enslave people based on religion.
Report as
Unless they tried to rebell.
Report as
That is part of the differences in the two stories. I figure the reality is somewhere in the middle. But then, isn't recorded history usually that way? : )

Read about, pray, then ponder. Depending on your religion, it may come in different ways. In James it says if any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of god, which givith liberally, and upbraideth not. (quoting from memory, I think it's St. James, 1: 13, could be remembering wrong). Also, you have to ask with a sincere heart. Also, it may not be knowing, since many ancient prophets just believed in him, and since they believed in him, they saw miricales, after which their believe changed into knowing. Miracles don't create faith, but faith creates miracles.

I really don't know. I think that some random person wrote the bible for popularity and money or whatever.I mean how would any writing survive all those years? Think about all the hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanoes, floods, and earthquakes that could have destroyed any writing or anything in general.Since God supposedly wrote the ten commandments, how could we be able to read or find any writing that ever existed in that time.So I think the Bible is not proof of anything, simply just a made up story.

Report as
Actually, a lot of written texts from that time have survived. Some portions of it have been proven true.

Just because you do not share beliefs with Christians does not mean the entire text is made up. That is a silly as saying that everything served at a restaurant is bad for you just because they serve french fries.

Good point!!!!!!!! But the volcanoes (if there were any at that time) would have destroyed anything in general.
Report as
The volcanoes, and floods, and fires, and war, and everything else that happens does not happen everywhere at the same time. There were great libraries all over the ancient world, there were those who hid the documents for safe keeping. Some did survive, you can even look them up on the internet or in a museum. Some did survive.

The Bible has transformed a countless number of lives. Yet many people allow the views of others who have never seriously studied the Bible to shape their own opinions. Each of us needs study it for ourselves. Put it to the test. Live by the Bible's precepts and experience for yourself the dynamic and transforming power of this amazing Book. Apply its teachings on forgiveness and see how it can mend a broken relationship. Apply its principles of stewardship and watch your financial situation improve. Apply its teaching on faith and feel a calming presence in your heart even as you navigate through a difficult trial in your life. The Bible works. No other book has been scrutinized like the Bible; yet it had continued to stand; archaeology supporting it; history from other sources verifying it; fulfilled prophecy confirming it.
Where other literature has a handful of manuscripts many hundreds of years after the event; the Bible has over 5500 manuscripts within 100-200 years of the events.
The most credible commendation comes from Jesus Christ Himself. I hope you will read it with a sincere heart and a critical mind. Ultimately, you will have to decide if you believe Him, not me, not anyone else.

Hi Richest, no one is denying the existence of historical places, but that doesn't make the Bible true. It's like saying "Gone With The Wind" is a true story because the American Civil War actually happened.

Report as
A new book, Has God Spoken, by Hank Hanegraaff, provides much much more detail that I can in one paragraph. "Gone with the Wind" does not claim to be true, nor even its characters. So I don't see the analogy. A better one would be to contrast the Book of Mormon, which speaks of peoples, cultures, places, etc. that are not historical and not found in archaeology.
Report as
Who says the American Civil War happened? Historians, eyewitnesses... And some of those need to be cross examined. Feel free to do that with the New Testament. That is what I meant; it has been cross checked for errors for hundreds of years. The sheer number of manuscripts, through the science of textual criticism, has helped to preserve the Bible today that can be deemed an accurate representation of the original.

Then, yes, you must decide if what they wrote was true or a lie. You must now decide if Jesus was LORD, liar, or lunatic. He was one of the three. He cannot be simply a good teacher or a prophet; He did not leave that as an option. I pray your decision is correct. Resurrection Day stands as the foundation of Christianity. The evidence for it demands a verdict.
Report as
Yes, but no one said general grant was gods general, or that he performed miracles.
Report as
You're right, Jesus was not just a prophet. He was also the Messiah, but of course that doesnt make him lord. The Bible is very clear about who God is..."Do not bow down to anything between the heaven & the earth and below the sea". That verse says it all. We shouldnt be worship a man but God alone only!
Report as
Jesus Himself told His enemies not to believe Him unless He gave them reason or proof. I happen to accept His miracles as part of His proof. His enemies never denied the evidence. They simply decided to kill Him, hoping to eliminate His movement. If Jesus had not risen from the dead, His ultimate 'check mate', there would have been no lasting movement. We would not be having this discussion.
Report as
You're missing the main point. "I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not make any graven IMAGES about ME anything on the land in the sky above or in the sea below." Until I find proof that Jesus pbuh said in his own words "I'm God",or "worship me" im not going to buy it. I'll stick with God who says in all his scriptures that only I am praise worthy!
Report as
Jesus is not a graven IMAGE. lol
We could read the Gospels together; plenty of proof of Jesus claiming power that only God has--power over nature, power over demons, power to forgive sins, power over disease, power over death. It is all there. Naturally the ultimate proof is His own resurrection. When Thomas said "My Lord and My God" Jesus did not rebuke him as a godly prophet should have and would have.
Respectfully, your Jesus has to be a false prophet and false teacher. When Jesus told the Jews He would be killed and on the third day be raised, He was a) telling the truth, b) telling a lie. I believe He told the truth.
When Jesus told His disciples on more than one ocassion that He must go to Jerusalem, suffer, die and be raised, He was a) telling a lie, or b) telling the truth. I believe He told the truth.
Report as
And you expect me to believe that based on books written anonymously 60 years after the facts? Good luck with that Richest!?
Report as
Perhaps you studied Caesar's Gallic War in college. There are only ten manuscripts and the oldest one is 900 years after the war. Just one example.
The Bible is trustworthy. It is a "lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
Report as
Well, at least Julius Caesar stays the author of the Gallic War just like Thucydide will stay the author the peleponesian war. Jesus didn't any books. That's a sad fact you gotta face my friend.

God talked to us through the entire Bible, through each and every Book, through His Holy Spirit. Prophecy fulfilled and prophecy to come. You talk about that there is no "Book of God"? Yet who wrote the Quran. Is it the Book of Allah or the book of a man named Mohamed?
Report as
Amen, greengables. Fulfilled prophecy is one area the Bible demonstrates it is divinely inspired. Prophets like Isaiah, Daniel, Micah, Zechariah, as well as David were inspired to write of the coming Messiah 500-900 years before Christ. The odds of one person fulfilling just 8 major prophecies is estimated at 1 in 10 to the 17th power. Amazing.
"But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned-every one-to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. "

I am thankful Jesus took my sins. As Jerry Bridges wrote, "Our debt to God is utterly unpayable." Jesus, Lamb of God, is worthy of glory and honor.
Report as
I never said there is no book of God. What I said was that Jesus didn't write any book which is true. As for the Quran, it is the word of Allah, not Muhammad. He could not have known the things that are found in the Quran.

"A revelation from Him (Allah) Who has created the earth and high heavens." Quran 20:4

Report as
Richest, the Jewish people say otherwise to what you just said.
Report as
So, Momo, you believe w/o question that the Quran was written by God, though it was passed downed orally by Muhammed and written by his followers.
You believe, that the Bible, was not written by God, because it was passed down orally by Jesus and written by his followers.
Sometimes your 'logic' astounds me.

Wesmills - The only way to decide what to believe and what not to believe is to think about what you read and hear. Just because some come to the conclusion there is no god does not mean they stopped thinking.

When a person berates another person for not believing as he does all he accomplishes is to drive other people away. And it does not matter what that person believes in, God or science, the affect is the same.

The fact that the Bible has never been able to be disproved in all its 1000's of years to me says that it is true. Along with the fact that as you really read it, you can see for yourself all the things it tells you would come to pass have been happening. There's no way to explain the things of God because we can only physically see with the eyes of man. When you look with your spiritual eyes, the truth is opened in a whole new way, and you can never really doubt again.
