It depends. If the negative is larger, it is negative. If the positive is larger subtract the negative and keep it as a positive. For example: -2+3 3 is larger so keep it positive and subtract 2 the answer is 1. If it was -3+2 keep it negative and subtract 2( you would go up instead of down) 3-2 is 1 keep it negative, the answer is -1. Any positive number multiplied or divided by a negative is always negative.
A positive number plus a negative number would depend on if the positive number was greater than the negative number. For instance, if it is 100 plus -40 you would take 40 away from 100 to get a positive 60, but if it was 30 plus -40 you would add them together to get -10.
