What is the difference between Indians and Native Americans?

My friend gets offended when I call her a Indian all the time. What is the difference between Indians and Native American?

note: I'm bad with the ladies.

Native American's have always been in America. Few if any have ever even been to India. They were called Indians because of Columbus' confusion of where he was at. If he didn't get lost on his way to India, we wouldn't have that problem.

Absolutely Denny. There are five hundred different nations here. But, that is confusing for those who want to catalog us.

There is a very big difference between an Indian and a Native American. Indians are from Indian the country while Native Americans are Red Indians or Cherokee Indians who have always lived in America. You can have a look at these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_Americans_in_the_United_States and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_people.

Well if you say; "she's Indian", that means she's from India, the country.
If you say; "She's A Indian", that means she"s a Native American.

If there was a group of people you would either say "their Indian", meaning Native American or "their from India".

The continent. Native Americans were called Indians because America was mistaken as India in the 1500-1600's.

Indians are from India, in southern Asia. Native Americans live (or lived as it were) within the Americas, North and South.
The Indian culture traces back to ancient times and is still a thriving culture today.
Native American cultures also dated back to ancient times. Unfortunately, their cultures were decimated by colonial imperialism and various diseases.
There are still some pockets of Native American culture alive today, despite such harsh realities of the past.

Indians=India, Native Americans=lived / live in Americas before Europeans came
Native Americans were called Indians accidentally because they thought they found India (they were wrong, btw if you didn't notice)
