I want to learn some more about christianity. Other than Catholics and protestants what other types are there?

I'm not asking for people to try to convert me to there religion or tell me things are fake. thanks ;).

Report as

Nevermind, what exactly are you wanting to learn in other froms of christianity? What I know of christianity is that a person is a believer and a follower of the Jesus in the scriptures. I don't know how else this can be. A person is either a follower of christ or not. Sounds like you are more intersted in learning about the different organized religions? Only problem is that not all believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He says who He is. (The way the truth and the life)

Well is there one where God isn't described as "perfect"? I don't think earthquakes would be his fault. If it was punishment I think there would be more in North America.

awww..thanks, raven. You, too. :)
Report as
Lolo, yes it seems like an irrelevant question to many. The fact is most of us aren't aware of how much diversity there is in the observable religion of Christianity. I call myself a "Christian for a lack of a better term" lol.
Some people often make the over generalization that after Constantine "took over" the rich diversity of the early church basically disappeared. That diversity actually survived quite well...as seem by today as well as the "Nestorians" who may be seen as an example of the "lost history" of the Christian church. Of course the Roman Church held a lot of power as it had inherited the political power of the Roman Empire, but there were significant sects that flourished under the radar (it seems) of the Roman Church. They flourished with all the basic "orthodox" beliefs of what has been recognized as specifically Christian. ;)

nevermind, well, I don't necessarily see the earthquakes as a punishment but of an imperfect world. And...North America is certainly due for more earthquakes...If you are looking for a checklist with which different religions define God as, you will definitely find divirsity in this. If you are looking for a religion who says God is not perfect, you may need to look into agnosticism.

Why? Mormonism is the 9gag of christianity
Report as
Mormons don't actually believe that Jesus is the son of God which is why other Christians don't consider them to be so.

I personally don't like the Mormons I've come into contact with. 1 neighbor tried to basically hold me hostage, 2 of those guys on bikes who try to convert people wouldn't stop following me and I've gone to LDS centers for genealogy research and this one woman goes "once someone is in, we never let them leave". Creepy.
Report as
I'm just saying, They asked, I answered. haha

I respectfully disagree. Mormonism's teachings do not reflect historic Christianity which is mono-theistic. Mormonism teaches that it's followers in good standing become Gods. Teachings on Baptism for dead contradicts the Scriptures; we die once and then the judgement. It's another gospel delivered by an angel so it is said.

I can't sleep due to the snoring of my dad and brother in this hotel room, so I gave up and went on here till I'm too tired to stay up, but I have been a member of the LDS church my entire life. And the difference (one of them) between other faiths is that we believe that God is the father of our spirits and Jesus Christ is his son, and that we have the holy ghost. We believe they are three seperate beings. I don't know where you heard we didn't believe Jesus is God's son, because I've learned that ever since I was tiny. Jesus IS God's beloved son. And that is what Mormons believe. I am very sorry about the impressions you got from other members.

I didn't know there was such a thing as as independent Christian since Christians are supposed to be part of the body of Christ.
Report as
They try to teach the whole bible not just the parts they like. Some of the bible aren't politically correct and has views that aren't always popular but that doesn't mean that people should disregard them. The independent church doesn't have a governing council or board dictating what the church can or cannot preach on.

A couple very early examples that developed out side of the "Roman church" were the Jacobites and Nestorians. There were others as well in the first three centuries before Constantine made "Christianity" a mandate of the empire. Keep in mind the Gnostics were Gnostics, not Christians (other than that they made certain claims to Jesus). Their view of Jesus was largely contrary to the scriptures that the first apostles(initial leaders/preachers) gathered as representing the Christian message of Christ.
Many examples are already given above of more modern examples. One postmodern example can be an "agnostic Christian" which occurs as trans-denominational.

That's pretty hard. They're the main. Protestant is technically anything other than Catholic in the Christian beliefs, but not anymore. Now I understand that you want to find more on Christianity, but most of the Christian Scriptures are the same, so just buy one. I would recommend a Bible that is generally considered just "Christian", so that you cover Christianity in general, and not just specifics and particulars in religions, although it's probably just gonna be some sort of Protestant Bible. If you just want to focus on a religion, I'd suggest Protestant since it's based off of most Christian religions and general beliefs. Although I prefer not to be a part of a religion, just a belief. I'm fine with a general Christian Bible, and a relationship with The Holy Trinity. If you're just curious of any other Christian religions, then look it up on Wikipedia or something. If you really want answers and The Holy Spirit permits you, He will "guide" you.

I respectfully disagree. This attitude teaches moral relativism. There is no right belief in other words. What we believe matters. And if Jesus is God and the preponderance of evidence says he is, he established one visible authoritative church and laid down some pretty serious rules and solidified the validity of the Mosaic Law. Remember too, the Bible came out of the church and not vice versa.

To learn more about Christianity, look for a local church is where the Bible (God's only Truth) has complete authority. The Bible is the only infallible rule of faith and practice (2 Timothy 3:15-17). Therefore, when seeking a church to attend, we should find one where, according to biblical standards, the gospel is preached, sin is condemned, worship is from the heart, the teaching is biblical, and opportunities to minister to others exist Christians should attend a local fellowship that declares Christ's headship in all matters of doctrine and practice. No man--whether pastor, priest, or pope--is the head of the church. All men die--how can the living church of the living God have a dead head? It cannot. Christ is the church's one supreme authority, and all church leadership, gifts, order, discipline, and worship are appointed through His sovereignty, as found in the Scriptures.gotquestions.org

Where did the Bible come from? It came out of The Church that had the Authority to choose what Writings were Scripture and which were not. Jesus started the Catholic Church and established the Apostle Peter as the Rock on which he would build His Church. Popes are men, yes but have a Divine office and with the successors of the Apostles, the Bishops teach with the Infallible authority of Jesus in terms of Faith an Morals. Q. Does God change? Bet your Church once belied contraception to be a grave sin but now it doesn't. Might want to look into that?
Report as
The Roman Catholic Church argues that Scripture was given to men by the Church and therefore the Church has equal or greater authority to it. However, even among the Roman Catholic Church's writings (from the First Vatican Council), you will find the acknowledgment that the Church councils that determined which books were to be considered the Word of God did nothing but recognize what the Holy Spirit had already made evident. That is, the Church did not "give" Scriptures to men, but simply "recognized" what God, through the Holy Spirit, had already given. As A. A. Hodge states, when a peasant recognizes a prince and is able to call him by name, it does not give him the right to rule over the kingdom. In like fashion, a church council recognizing which books were God-breathed and possessed the traits of a God-inspired book, it does not give the church council equal authority with those books.http://www.gotquestions.org/Catholic-tradition.html
