Why do we get hiccups?

Report as

Hiccups are as a result of an irritation to the phrenic or the vagus nerves. The hiccups occur when the diaphragm suddenly and involuntarily contacts. As it contracts, you breathe in quickly and the incoming air is stopped in the glottis producing a sound. Visit http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Hiccup/Pages/Causes.aspx for more information.
