Designate the unknown number by x. Then (60 %)x = 21, or 0.6x = 21, or x = 35
First time I cheated to give an answer. I hope this helped you

math formula for reference "is" - "=" What Number" - we will call "X"
There for
21 = 60/100 * X
to solve for X, divide both sides by 60/100 (which is also .6)
21/.6=X
35 = X

Proof
35 * .6 = 21

Once again....No sledgehammer needed here... divide 21 by the decimal equivalent percent (21/60), then multiply that answer by 100.

Old man's math for dummies....

Of course, you could also practice your algebra equations, which would help you prepare to solve more complex problems.
