Is it bad for your dog to drink out of the toilet?

Don't get me wrong, I don't condone it, but sometimes I forget to shut the lid on the toilet and then I hear the dog drinking from it.

Do you think it would be bad for you to be drinking out of the toilet?

Human anatomy and canine anatomy are not the same. For instance, we can eat chocolate but it is not good for dogs.

Well it is water, but there's probobaly chemicals in the toilet that filters your "waste"

Not necessarily, it IS still water. There may be chemicals that filter/flush the toilet remaining in the toilet after it's been flushed. There may also be some other--erm... remains in the toilet after it's been flushed...

Why not?

its water that comes from a pipe, just like the water that comes from the pipes in your kitchen. The pipe doesnt know where its sending the water to.
Report as
People go to the bathroom in it so the walls are covered in bacteria and that makes the water filled with bacteria.

yes its bad just think of all the bacteria that resides there. do you really want your dog to give you kisses after drinking from the toilet?

Kisses aren't a problem. I don't allow that with this dog. But is the bacteria bad for the dog... not worried about me.

Its water from a pipe. The same way the pipe brings u water to ur kitchen sink. his water bowl may have been out all day and has debris, insects in it. Maybe he wanted fresh water, like, when u flush the toilet.
Would I drink water from the toilet, uh-no! But I'm human. I get water from the grocery store that sells (Bottled Spring Water) water that fish and bears have used as their bathroom. So umm, maybe I am drinking out of someone's toilet :)
I dont think toilet water is bad for ur dog, as long as u dont have any chemicals in it, that "blue" block that makes the water blue or feces or pee in it.

First of all.... THANK YOU for actually answering. I'm not looking for an answer that makes it "ok" to forget to put the lid down, but you at least put thought into it. I don't add the "blue" block so no worries there. I wonder if it's the taste of the water from the water bowl? I ended up buying for them (cats as well), the continually running water bowl that also has a filter.

No it's not bad for the dog to drink toilet water,as long as it's been flushed, don't forget dogs drink from roadside puddles and aren't any worse off for it because their systems can withstand a lot more "junk" then ours can. It's also been said that dogs mouths are way cleaner than ours are.

Ur welcome. My cat drinks out of the toilet sometimes and I know thats when he the kids forgot to clean his waterbowl and give him fresh water. And sometimes he'll go into the bathtub and just stand in there, waiting for one of us to get the point, lol.
I think they just like fresh water sometimes. Maybe there's something in their waterbowl that we cant see or smell and they want it out. They will get their hydration by any means necessary, lol

It is bad for the dog to drink the water because all of the water that comes from your faucet and in water bottles has been through a cleaning process to get rid of the waste and bacteria. Toilets have clean water too but the water is filled with bacteria because people use the bathroom in it.
