Divide the top number by the lower number as many times as it can, to give a whole number. The remainder (always smaller than the lower number) is now placed as the top number. A good way of addressing this problem is assuming you have five oranges to divide between two people (5/2). Each will get 2 whole ones and 1 will remain. For them to share equally, you will divide the 1 between the two people and give them 1/2 each. Each gets 2 1/2.
Remember, bottom into top. Divide the denominator into the numerator and your answer is the whole number. If there is a remainder, put the remainder over the original denominator and put that fraction beside the whole number. Ex. 14/3 Bottom into top. 14 divided by 3 is 4. Your whole number is 4. Remainder- 2. Remainder over original denominator- 2/3. Answer: 4 2/3
