Here are some things I know regarding the independent Baptists. They generally hold to a high view of scripture meaning that it is literally inspired as the Word of God. They hold to traditional positions on the deity of Jesus Christ, and the tri-Unity of God, and the personal Holy Spirit. They hold to man being born in sin, and salvation not by works but by Grace ALONE, through Faith ALONE, in Christ ALONE. They hold to eternal security, meaning that you cannot lose your salvation if it is based on the work of God and not on your personal performance. They are named I believe because of their position that Baptism is by immersion and not by sprinkling and required for membership in the Church. The independent Baptist Church is led by a Pastor and a body of elders or deacons. Oddplatano...I was looking for your reply on the NWT. If you have some info on that, pass it along. Thanks. G
First Baptist, Second Baptist, American Baptist, Southern Baptist, General Baptist, Independent Baptist, Primitive Baptist - the list goes on and on. Today, there are at least 65 different Baptist associations or denominations in the United States. Some retain a strict autonomy for the local church, while others have more of a denominational structure. Some have very conservative views of doctrine and practice, while others are quite progressive and liberal. Even within some groups there is a wide divergence of practice, so it is hard to pin down exactly what they believe. gotquestions.org.
