I worked for a vet for years. PLEASE LISTEN TO ME: dark chocolate is 10x worse then the consumption of any other type of chocolate. Please call a vet immediately as I knew of several animals who died rather painful deaths because their owners didn't know any better. Look out for HUGE warning signs like hyperactivity, extreme panting, or anything else out of the ordinary. This can and WILL cause kidney failure if not treated IMMEDIATELY. The amount consumed versus the size of the dog matters very little when it comes to dark chocolate (milk chocolate is less worrisome).

Great advice, Erin. I wish everyone on this site could read this and educate themselves. I can't believe the people who would come to this question and tell the kid not to worry, everything will be fine. That's more than irresponsible, it's almost criminal.

Call the vet, the smaller the dog, the worse it could be. They will know.

Not all the mainly depending on size if you go to the vet now they are able to make your dog throw the chocolate up

They also can't have raw potatoes or carrots.

How much did it eat, how much does it weigh, and is it currently showing odd behavior. These variables dictate the difference in between stomach ache and flatulence, or a trip to vet, most likely the former.

And yes it can die, but once again depends on these variables.

Don't worry!!! My dog ate a brownie once and she's healthy! And she's a small dog too!

but my dog is a pit bull and he kinda big
Report as
A brownie is not the same as dark chocolate,
Report as
It was very irresponsible of you to allow your dog to eat a brownie. I hope you will not let this happen again. You cannot know when the dog will be okay and when the dog will die of kidney failure.

Ur annoying

Omg irony! This exact same thig happened to my chihuahua on Thursday, take it to the vet! Don't wait, they will make your dog vomit it up and give it fluids and it should be okay but if you wait too long it will most likely die, I'll be praying! <3
+dark chocolate is the worst out there for dogs

Dearest Logan and Saturn, Ask.com is NOT a social website and if your dog has just eaten chocolate, Logan, why aren't you on your way to the vet right now?

Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.
You can recognize that your dog has eaten a toxic dose of chocolate from the symptoms. Within the first few hours, the evidence includes vomiting, diarrhea or hyperactivity. As time passes and there's increased absorption of the toxic substance, you'll see an increase in the dog's heart rate, which can cause arrhythmia, restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, increased urination or excessive panting.
This can lead to hyperthermia, muscle tremors, seizures, coma and even death.
Dark chocolate is the worst kind for a dog. GET THAT DOG TO A VET if you see ANY of these symptoms!!

Why are you not at the vet, Logan? I think pretty much everyone told you he needs to go to the vet, and you just sat around chatting (which is NOT what Ask.com is for).

Phonnie: Is he alright now?

TexasDogMom: She's not old enough to drive, which means someone else had to take her dog to the vet. And, btw, if Ask strictly wasn't for chatting, the mods wouldn't allow it.

It will probably start feeling sick and kill over. I am not really sure why dogs die from chocolate, I just know they do. Get it to the vet before something does happen.

It contains theobromine, a stimulant that causes kidney failure and ultimately, seizures and heart failure. Any chocolate is bad for your dog, dark chocolate is by far the worst.

dogs can die from eating chocolate, grapes, and raisins but dogs can have a little of it and it won't kill them, but don't give them too much or they will die

Dark chocolate is the worst kind of chocolate you could have allowed your dog to get. Get him to the vet right away. Don't take time to induce vomiting. The vet will induce vomiting and start the dog on Vitamin K intravenously. The Vitamin K helps support the kidneys, which are the first organs to be attacked by the chocolate.

In the future, if you can't keep the damned chocolate and other things that will kill your dog, away from your dog, you should seriously consider getting a goldfish, and leaving the dogs for other, more responsible people.

oh do u hav a problem with me having dogs?!?
Report as
I have a problem with anyone who doesn't care for their animals in a kind and responsible way. The end of my answer was intended to, hopefully, get your attention to help you realize how serious it can be to allow your dog to have access to something that can kill him. Imagine if your dog had died from this--just think how terrible you would feel, and there wouldn't be anything you could do to make it better. FYI--dogs can also die if they eat raw potatoes, grapes or raisins.
Report as
I apologize for the tone of my last paragraph. I get very worked up when it comes to dogs--just check my user name. I'm very glad that your dog didn't die from eating the chocolate. :-)
