Do horses ever sit or lay down?

Report as

They lay down but not for very long since they are so heavy it can be uncomfortable for them and you can teach a horse to sit if you wanted

oh well i heard that it was a natural instinct to stay alert from predators, so they can run right away without having to get up.
Report as
Yeah they were definatly built to stand and run rather then laydown or sit thats why it's so uncomfertable becuase they adapted more for standing becuase of this natural instinct
Report as
oh but they do sit and lay down then huh? thats interesting
Report as
Laying down yes but sitting ussally has to be taught so it's not considered natural for a hourse. we see alot of hourses laying down
Report as
i've never ever seen that. i want to though
Report as
haha to me it's not that interesting but i'm sure you can find a video on youtube. Shang High Noon is a movie and features a hourse sitting in one of the sceans it stars Jackie Chan an Owen Willson :)

Sometimes, bu it's uncomfortable for them, so they stand up more. Never saw one sit or lay down though.

yes! we have Tennessee Walkers and they lay down all the time and for long periods of time
w/out having a hard time getting up, they especially lay down at night and when they are
about to foal. However I have seen one sit even as a trick.

Actually, being an equestrian and equine caretaker myself I can say to you that my horses do lie down every night for at least 5 hours, but some older horses just stand and cock one of their back legs. Horses do not sit naturally, but you can teach them.

how would you teach them?
Report as
Oh, like as a trick. My horse yesterday laid down and he looked dead and I went over and he was lying like that on purpose. The others were sleeping laying down in the stables.
