What should I do post-op after wisdom tooth extraction?

I had all four wisdom teeth out Friday and didn't know I was supposed to be rinsing with a saltwater mix until today. Tomorrow I start using a syringe to rinse out my lower sockets with the same saltwater mix. However, today though I noticed a funny taste in my mouth and my family said there was a funny smell as well. I have a Chlorhexidine Gluconate mouth wash that I used pre-Op and was wondering what exactly I should do about the smell/taste. I've also got a Sock-it oral wound dressing gel that I have to start tomorrow as well.

No straws! No slurping or spitting! Dry socket is very painful. Warm food or cold is best at first cause Hot will swell you up. Ice helps 20 min on 15 off. Top roman and jello are good. the smell is something to watch. Hope it's not infection. Keep going with the salt rinse it will kill germs and speed healing up a lot. Good luck!

The smells from the surgery. It's normal. Try not to over medicate it & do the salt water. Especially after you eat.

so the smell isn't likely from an infection or anything?

If it's like really awful & not healing right, then you should probably go get it looked at.. but otherwise, I'd say that's kinda normal. I'm pretty sure my mouth smelled pretty gross when mine were removed.

The smell might be due to an infection caused by food particles and debris. Rinse the mouth gently with a solution of one-half teaspoonful of salt dissolved in a glass of water and repeat after every meal or snack for seven days. Keep your mouth very clean as this will promote healing.
