Is it bad my dad NEVER helps me on my homework?

My dad will NEVER help me on my homework, until I'm crying and he finally decided to help me. I really hate this happening all the time, and because of this my grades have been dropping. He thinks I'm just lazy or I don't focus in class, but I really do. It's just I have too much stress because of him that I don't know what to do. He always assumes that I should stop playing video games and such. But everything he assumes about me is WRONG. I wish he'd help me, but he would never bother. He's got plenty of free time, but he thinks I need to solve it myself. I just don't under stand the problem! Help? :(

I think that your dad helping you with your homework would be a great opportunity for the two of you to spend more time together. It may not be that he is unwilling to help you as much as he is afraid that he isn't up to speed on the subjects that they currently teach in school. I know I would be lost on a lot of it. I think he probably doesn't want to appear foolish or ignorant in front of you. Why don't you try writing your dad a letter telling him how you feel? I think parents SHOULD help their kids with homework. Being involved with your child is one way to keep the lines of communication open. There will come a day when he regrets every minute he didn't spend with you.

No. It's your homework! He did his years ago. I am sure if you got stuck and asked him for his help, he would help you. Just don't expect him to do it for you.

Ok. Is there someone else that can help you or is the issue more of you wanting some positive attention from your dad? Figure out what it is that bothers you so much about him not helping you when you want him to. We all know that there are many other resources for you to get help if you really had to.

Depends. If you ask him a lot and he doesn't help you or finds an excuse out of it then well it is. yeah that might be bad. talk to him and ask him why. he should help you. that's why he is there.

Hi BlueDragon321,
Honestly, It is kind of sad that your father does not help you on your homework in the time of need. But, maybe he expects you do not need his help? Or possibly if he does take a glance at your work then possibly he does not understand or can explain the problem towards you, But please consider asking your teacher for help, Im positive he/she will be glad to help you. Best of Luck!

It is your homework. Is your dad going to help you in the finals? You can ask him doubts but not ask him to solve it. When he was your age, he might haven't got the facilities you get so he wants you to take advantage of this and study more. Try to pay more attention and answer more questions in class. Talk about what you learnt in school over dinner. This would make your dad believe that you are doing well. But at the same time do not feel shy about asking questions to your parents or teachers. Good Luck!

Well I can see why your dad won't help you...no offence but this doesn't seem like the place to get answers for your family issues. Just man up and say, hey dad what's the deal? why won't you help me? be a father and do what parents do and help me be successful in life. might not be the answer you wanted but hey you posted it...

I think this depends greatly on your age. When my children were very young, I sat with them while they did their home work & helped them. As they got older it was more up to them, if they had a problem working something out, I would explain how to solve the problem or help them find the relevant books. Maybe if you explain to your dad that you don't expect him to do the work for you, you just need his help to work it out, he maybe a little bit more inclined to help you. To me it is his job as your parent to help you through life, good luck

BlueDragon. I tend to agree with your dad, so you may want to stop reading my answer now. Ask gets a hundred homework "questions" everyday. No one seems to want to do their own homework anymore. Your dad knows you better than we do. Don't blame him for your bad grades. If you are having trouble, school is the best place to get help. You can get a tutor, teacher or fellow student to help. Your dad may not have as much "free" time as you think. He works and takes of a house, kids and other adult responsibilities. That's his "job" as a parent. Your "job" is only to go to school. Teaching a child to be self sufficient is the best thing a parent can do for a child. I give dad an A+.

I actually think he doesn't want to help you with your homework because he wants you to be independent and when you're older, you don't have to ask for help because you know how to do it and other things in life in the future.
