Why are all the new movies being done in 3D when its been around for 50+ years and no one has cared except kids.

Are movie making businesses just trying to revive an industry that's suffering from a loss of originality?

The modern 3D trend is fad that can't end soon enough for me. Don't get me wrong, it makes sense in some contexts or genres more than others and indeed does add a Wow factor or spectacle to films this year. It's awful when this technique gets applied as an after thought to movies (Hi Clash of the Titans!) or to subject matter that is not really well suited to the 3D experience. Good uses: Anything Pixar does, anything James Cameron does except for a Titanic in 3D re-release. If you dislike the 3D trend, blame Avatar. The 3D was so compelling, some folks only ever want to see movies "that way" from now on - especially studios who just look at the box office take and audience focus group comments.

I think that 3D movies have become popular again because the technology has developed a lot recently (especially in the making of the movie "Avatar") and people are excited about it again.

Seeing a 3D movie is also something you can't do easily at home, so maybe movie companies are trying to draw audiences out to theaters and away from their TVs more.
