How much does the average American spent on utilities and gasoline in 20 years?

It's for an English research paper. Please help.

An average American spends $128,480 on utilities and gasoline. According to http://retireby40.org/2012/01/spend-coffee-gas-pets-beer/, an average American spends $4,155 on gasoline and $2269 on utilities. If you add $2269 and $4155, you get the amount that one family spends in a year. Then multiply it by 20 to get $128,480, which is the amount he or she spends on gasoline and utilities in 20 years.
