Why do people believe in a god? Why don't people believe in a god? What is the point?

Report as

Faith is the ability to believe something is true, even when there is no evidence to support that truth. Therefore, people who believe in god were conditioned to believe from early childhood. Conditioning is why they believe, plus they learn the words of the rhetoric. Those who do not believe, base their position on the absence of evidence. For them, proof is essential and there is no proof that there is a god. For them, believing in god is like believing in ghosts.
The point? I have never met an atheist who minds if other people find comfort in their god, but I have met a lot of rabid, aggressive, disrespectful religious types who are personally offended and disgusted that there are people in the world with perspectives that differ from theirs.

It's all quite annoying. It's the ignorance and the blind willingness to believe and project ideas that have no basis in reality. The blather becomes the rhetoric. Glad you are like-minded on this.

These are natural questions any one asked and especially at your age. As with your last question about being a different religion that your parents. People come onto their own thinking and make new decisions. At your age you have to respect your parents right now but that's no reason to not read the bible on your own or do some devotionals that are different than what you are used to. I love Jesus, that is why I go to church, so that I can fellowship with other believers. Stick with it. Remember that it's the same Jesus that died for your sins and the same loving God that created you no matter what building you go to on Sunday mornings.

Whew! Looks like you got it all figured out. "Faith" is everything. I suppose if a person doesn't believe in God it is their own fault, not the omnipotent being in question who makes them able to questions why all the secrecy around his existence.

We believe in God because he is there. It's like believing in the wind, u know it's there whether u see it or not. The reason people.don't believe is because they don't want to give up a lot of things and they simply don't want to change. And the point is that God created all of us and we all have souls he wants back in Heaven with him. As followers of God, all we want to do is please God and make it to Heaven back with him.

God is our creator. Without him we would not exist. Look around at the beauty of the earth. How could you not believe in God? Believing means you must have the ability to have Faith in something you cannot see or feel. God sent his only son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16. You might try asking God yourself. He will show you the answers you seek. You just have to open your heart and your mind to Him and he is always there for you. Many things and people on this earth will fail or disappoint you but God always is there and he will always be there to help you through your life but you have to be willing to accept Him and ask him into your life. One day all will see the truth. God bless

I believe in god because life would seem pointless and empty if there wasn't more to it than what we can see and touch. In the end it comes down to having faith, to hold onto something without any evidence other than existence. Everyone will have their own reason to believe or not to, it is difficult to give one answer for your question.

Humans have a need for there to be something more than the life we have now. They have a need for there to be someone who punishes those who do evil and reward those who do good. That is why religion was created. Some people no longer have these animal instincts so they no longer need to believe in a fictitious being such as "god". They realize the truth that others refuse to even consider, let alone accept. Your third question can be answered in the answer to your first and second question. I advise you not to allow anyone to dictate your own beliefs. You are allowed to believe in what you choose. Those who are religious will try to pressure you unto their side, while those who aren't religious will also try to convince you to join them. Only you can choose what you believe. I ask of you only this: Regardless of what you choose to believe, always respect the beliefs of those with opposing views and allow them to live their lives as they please.

Not everyone believes for the same reason. Some believe because thats what they were raised to believe and they really think its true. Some believe because it gives them hope that theirs something beyond death, and/or something greater than the world theyre in now. Some need extra motivation to do the right thing, reward heaven, punishment hell, basically what Silvia said. And Im sure there are other reasons as well. Without religion there would be chaos, since nobody would believe, all those people who need to believe in god to do the right thing, would be on their own without a rule book on life (example: bible) they wouldnt know whats right or wrong.
There are also multiple reasons people DONT believe. Maybe something happened that made them think "If god were real, he wouldnt let this happen." Some dont see any proof that god exists. And Im sure there are other reasons.
There are different points on believing or not believing. It all depends on your reason. IMO, if youre an honest person, theres no point. You just believe or dont and theres no motive behind it. Its just what you know is real, or what you know is not real.

Sorry, but if the world was a purely atheist place, it wouldn't be total chaos. Atheists do have morals and know what's wrong and right, they're not just a bunch of ruthless, savage, crooks and murderers. In fact, a world without religion would actually be better. Look at how many have died in "holy" wars over "holy" land or because people have different beliefs. The evidence is there, but no one who's religious is willing to recognize it.
Report as
Woah, you're taking what I said way out of context. I used to be an athiest, my brother is an athiest, my husband is and athiest. I know they have morals. All I said was that since those certain people (who are reglious now) who can't figure out what right and wrong is without religion won't have a religion to guide them, THEY would be the ones causing chaos. Not the people who are athiests even when religion exists. And I wouldn't speak for all athiests if I were you, not all of them have morals, just like not all christians have morals. And if anyone thinks that you can be a christian and not have morals, I would LOVE to give you some examples. THERE ARE BAD CHRISTIANS.
Report as
You're right, I miss read your answer. I see what you meant. And yes, there are some atheists and some theists who have no morals, I was just meaning that most people have morals, religious or not.

Religion does give people a great deal of comfort and hope. Who doesn't want to think that goodness will be rewarded with eternal bliss with loved ones at their side? The threat of Hell is a very powerful tool for maintaining social order. Who doesn't want good to triumph over the evil doers? And all the while there is a heavenly father watching our every move. Nearly every religion is based on these basic concepts. Some people seek a god in the sky. Some feel no need to seek anything. Some of us feel we were born with all we need.

People believe or don't for so many reasons. They believe because they were forced to, mainly. Know any children who were raised to believe whatever they want? But they also believe because they are scared to NOT believe (after-death puishment). And they don't believe because they realize, for the most part, it doesn't make sense. Those are the basic reasons.

The first 2 are unnecessary to answer. Answer the third one first and don't waste time on the first 2. I am an Apathetic Agnostic: I don't know and I don't care. Explain to me how a person who helps others and tries to do the best he/she can doesn't believe in God and goes to hell and the murderer who repents on his deathbed goes to heaven? Incongruent. So really, why bother worrying if there is a God or not because it will NEVER be settled until he/she comes to you personally. Other than that, just do the best you can. If there is a God, he/she will recognize it. If not, then all that matters is how you feel about yourself.

They believe for piece of mind. It's like a security blanket. That's just one reason. I do not believe because I don't think that praying to a man in the sky is going to make my life better. I think I have to take responsibility for my own life and decisions and not hand it over to god. Some say that god protects children, evidence around the world proves otherwise. There is more proof against god than there is for "him"

Why do I believe in God?
I believe in Him because He is real. God is indeed real, the most real thing in existence. He created us, and He loves us. He is actually holding every thing in physical and spiritual existence - if He ceased to do so, we would all vanish while He continues to exist. God is our Father. God is our Creator, or Redeemer, and our Sanctifier. God is the Blessed Trinity - three distinct Persons who share the same divine nature. God is an eternal family. God is Truth. God is love. He is the ultimate reality. He is actually holding all things in existence. If God stopped doing so, we would cease to exist, but He would continue to exist. He is the Supreme Being. he is self-existing (not caused), eternal, all-powerful, all-knowing, and present everywhere. God is pure spirit, which means he does not have the limitations of a body. God is also supremely personal. he is no more force or power. In fact, he is a communion of persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is the Blessed Trinity. (My answer continues in the comments)

Helpful Fun Thanks for voting Comments (3)
Report as
All three persons posses the one divine nature yet we are distinct. He loves you and all of us, created the human race, Earth, and the Universe. His love is all-powerful, for He is love. The Meaning of Life is very simple to us who have studied the Catholic faith - to love and serve God as our Eternal Creator and Father.
Why don't people believe in God?
I focus more on my religion than the fact that some people don't believe in God. Nonetheless, we should always pray for them and occasionally evangelize to them, yet you should refrain from it if it annoys them - though it is better to evangelize than allow them to risk losing their soul to hell. The number one reason why atheists usually don't believe in God is because there is so much suffering and evil in the world - and they don't understand that it is because of our free will and sin.
Report as
Those who follow Christ must suffer with Him too, and if we don't we are not His disciples. Probably the second reason is because there is "no rational proof" that God exists. What they don't realize is that proof is all around us. The universe could not just "come together" without a source. That source must have been God, and no, the Big Bang theory does not prove that the universe could have been created apart from a God. Also, think of this - even a simple flower has a complicated structure and purpose. A flower, sometimes known as a bloom or blossom, is the reproductive structure found in flowering plants (plants of the division Magnoliophyta, also called angiosperms). The biological function of a flower is to effect reproduction, usually by providing a mechanism for the union of sperm with eggs. Flowers may facilitate outcrossing (fusion of sperm and eggs from different individuals in a population) or allow selfing (fusion of sperm and egg from the same flower). Some flowers produce diaspores without fertilization (parthenocarpy). Flowers contain sporangia and are the site where gametophytes develop. Flowers give rise to fruit and seeds. Many flowers have evolved to be attractive to animals, so as to cause them to be vectors for the transfer of pollen. Since flowers have such a complicated and scientific function, how can anyone possibly believe this came together by chance? Not to mention the miracles God has presented to us even today - Stigmata, Incorruptible bodies of the saints, the rest are too numerous to count. Other atheists simply refuse to believe in God because they don't see what He has to do with their lives, such as agnostics. God GAVE us our lives as precious gifts, and so we must serve and love Him with all our hearts.
Report as
What is the point of believing in God?
Because loving, knowing, and serving God is the very meaning of life itself. If you are a Christian (Catholic, specifically), then you would know that God put us here to love and serve Him. That has always been clear to those of us who have studied Christianity. Many people, once including me, wonder what God does to deserve our love and praise, why only He should be loved above all things. Well, first of all, He is the Supreme Being, holding everything in existence. If He ceases to do so, we will all vanish, but He will continue to exist. Second, He created us, without Him we wouldn't be here. Third, He came to Earth in the form of a human 2000 years ago (Jesus Christ), to DIE for us. He came here, was crucified, beaten and spat on by His own creation so that we wouldn't be damned to Hell. He died for our sins. He was raised to life once again and ascended back into Heaven. Fourth - God will give us everything we ever wanted in return for our love and praise. He will give us a mansion, riches, thousands of friends, and Eternal Life in Heaven forever. The Meaning of Life is to love, serve, and praise God forever.
