If palm oil production is so bad for orangutans because it depletes their habitat then why don't companies replace it with a different one?

You have to understand the dynamics of business and large scale operations. It is almost impossible for a company to stop what they were producing and start producing something else, because it is too expensive. The high cost would be made even worse by the fact that some products have almost no substitutes, meaning finding another raw material to make oil out of apart from palms would be very hard. It might even put the company out of business.
