When you get your tonsils taken out, does it hurt afterwards?

Report as

No, not really. When I had mine removed, it didn't hurt, I just had a sore throat for a bit, but you get to eat a lot of ice cream!

Usually, yes. That's why the doctors give you ice cream afterwards. To numb your throat. I've never gotten my tonsils removed, but I think it would be worth it with so much ice cream and sundaes.

Not everyone has to get their tonsils removed. It's just like the appendix. Some people have problems with it, some don't. And when they remove them you are under anesthesia, so you don't feel anything as they get rid of them. I had mine removed when I was three and I don't remember if there was pain afterwards, sorry :/

Eh, yes and no.. If it does for you - eat the popsicles that have antioxidants in them. They helped alot for me!(:

Hi and I understand you want to know if it will hurt.

I raised six kids and four of them had their tonsils removed. It hurt their throat the first day and they did not feel like talking or doing anything at all and just rested.

I gave them ice cream, popsicles and soft cold foods to sooth the pain in their throat and made sure they had liquid Tylenol for the pain so they did not have to try and swallow pills and it worked fine to take away the pain. I avoided orange juice for the first day and anything acidic, I stuck to papaya juice and alkaline juices and softer foods like bananas so it would not hurt their throat.

By the second day, my kids were sitting up and talking and by the third day they were up playing again.

If you are going to have your tonsils removed and have questions or concerns, I would call the nurse or your doctor and ask them questions like; how long will it hurt, how long will it take to heal? It's your body and you have a right to know what to expect.

I hope this has helped. :)
