There are plenty of ways, but depending on the distance, the answer would be different
Long distance relationships work when they are short term. There has to be hope that it's in the foreseeable future within reason. Daily contact, nightly contact, full disclosure of activities to keep trust. Full explanation of sudden absences of expected or presumed contact, intimate talk with contact, not just accounting of the day. Letter or email, exchange of photos regularly, support from each other when struggling, not frustration. Visits as needed and afforded. If someone is in military or college and that's why the separation these things are important. If you met someone online it's fruitless. If someone moved and you are still in high school, don't be exclusive, enjoy your school life it's crazy to wait for them because after graduation you will both know if you need to reconnect.
