Yes, doctors in my region give out the kits for free and you send them or take them to any lab and they send them in for processing. You don't even have to pay for a stamp. You get a letter back later telling you the results. It's easy, private, and efficient.
Rathkeale is right... you can even purchase the kits at most chain drug stores and mail it in. However, this only tests for occult (hidden) blood in the stool and should not be used as a substitute for regular medical screenings (ie: colonoscopy).
I wouldn't even suggest a trained medical professional to perform elaborate procedures on his/herself. However, if they sell (legal) do-it-yourself kits that are meant for personal procedure and are made by professionals, then I guess it's okay.
