Finding the prime factors of a number is simply breaking it up to the smallest prime numbers possible.

96 can be divided by 3...
3 x 32 = 96
32 can be divided by 2...
3 x 2 x 16 = 96
16 can be divided by 2...
3 x 2 x 2 x 8 = 96
8 can be divided by 2...
3 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 4 = 96
4 can be divided by 2...
3 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 96

These numbers are all prime numbers now, and can by multiplied to get 96.

For further information, if you want to simplify this.....

3 x 2^5 = 96

This, 3 times 2 to the 5th power, is your answer. :-)

8, 16 & 32 aren't prime numbers. A prime number is a number only divisible by 1 and itself.

I know that. I was showing the steps. Before I reached the bottom, I wasn't finished yet. I was getting there.
