Why do people throw a coin in a fountain and make a wish?

Just Curious

Report as

People usually throw a coin in the fountain to make a wish or wish for luck. Generally, fountains have been inspired by the romance of the legend behind Rome's famous Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi).

Some believe they are making a sacrifice and through their sacrifice, they will be granted favor. Many do it simply because they saw others do it.

that's not actually a magic that the wish is suddenly granted magically. It's only for enhancing the believe in yourself to make the wish fulfilled.

When people through a coin in a fountain, they believe that if they make a wish, it will come true. It's really dumb.

People believe their wishes would be granted if they give up a coin. I believe this tradition stems from hundreds of years ago when people gave up things of humongous value into a reservoir. Now, it's just a penny, which is not of great value at all, therefore does nothing. But again, that is what I believe.
