Some people believe that writing started in Egypt around 3200 BC while others say that it originated from China around 1200 BC. It developed as an expressing language by letters or other marks. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_writing for more information.

I was watching a show a few months ago that said the first documented writing was found to be done by Sumerians, long before Egyptians and China.
