Why did they call THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE Golden if it's red

I'm wondrous

I'm not sure about this... I think it used to be golden but it got old and started turning a red color.

Well, California is considered the GOLDEN state. We had a big gold rush back in the 1840's....Plus red is the most logical color. Since it's the color of rust, if the bridge starts to look rusty the red paint will hide it. And it takes years to paint the bridge so they want to limit time and energy.
