Getting a GED good or bad?

I am two months away from finalizing junior year in high school recently I thought about getting a GED and getting a full time job. Both my folks are of a particular age who need constant care. None the less assisting financially is really important..my father recently filed for disability and my mother has one job. I am a healthy person with working legs and arms why would they struggle. It is IMPORTANT I work but school gets in the way. I realize the bad wrap a GED gets but I am in a tight squeeze...any helpful comments?

Stay in school. Go to college. Then get a good job. It will help you more in the long run. The job market is brutal for those without a college education.

Being so close to senior year I really think you should graduate. I know your parents are in a tough spot but you also need to think of your future. A GED can only get you so far, but if you graduate and go to college you will be making more money in the long run and be able to help your parents even more. But even if your not thinking that far into the future you only have one more year and it flys by..try to hang in there.

you should drop out of high school and GET your GED as soon as possible and get a job and sign up for the next semester at a local community college. you will be a year ahead of all your peers still in high school. you will be ahead in school and finances.

Wait to see if your father gets disability. You having an income could effect that. Once you know, than you can see how much you can earn, before it will have an effect. You may only be able to get a part time job, in which case it is better to just stay in school. Some schools even have work programs. Where you have a shorter school day and your work will count towards credits for graduation. It is something to check into. Those programs will also train you so you are not stuck in some low paying job and can advance for better pay. Good luck to you! It sounds like you have a lot to deal with at a young age.

my dad gets disibility but money is tight i look foward to college and i Ihave my mind set on my career but I can't change my fortune...I find it important to work. My high school is terrible it lacks motivation and many teachers don't take their job serious..because of my constant absence teachers assume I'm a slacker I have a lot going on at home and a GED seems easier at least to work full time.

Do you have a local community college that has a high school program? It is still a GED, but carries a bit more weight since it is thru a community college. It is also an easier step into college. My brother did this because he suffers from ADHD and a normal high school really didn't work for him. Then when you do get your ged take you can take one or two college classes to get you started on your career. And you do still need to talk to SSI and see how much you can earn before it effects his disability.

My brother in law is on disability and lives with his mother and we have to be careful on how we give gifts so they don't go over their allowed income.

I actully looking into colleges that offer that as we speak I've missed a couple of days from school as it is I have little interest in being in high school I feel irelevant...my dad recieves SSI 800 a month but that pays rent only so my mother provides everything else. But she was recently diagnosed with diabetes as well as my dad. I find it unfair to make her work.

Do not get a GED if any way possible. However; it you really have no alternative, do not fret. Junior Colleges have programs where you can earn your GED and go right into college. Some even provide a computer so you can take online classes. Before you do anything, check to see if your state provides virtual school. (school online). If they do, ..great, you can take the same courses you are in and it counts as an actual diploma. If not, then sign up to take Florida Virtual (you do not have to be in Florida) If you live out of state, they charge a small fee, but again, it counts as an actual diploma, and some of the courses count as College credit as well, so its a double bonus.

That sounds great! Do you think if I go to my schools advisor and tell him my situation mention finishing junior and senior year in a local college he'll admit me to a program that would count as a h.s diploma? Or should I scout colleges for those offerings?

You don't have to do either (Although, your counselor might know if they offer a virtual in your school district), You can just ask your education department if they offer virtual school. If they don't, log onto Florida Virtual School, and they will provide you a number. Call and explain your circumstance, and they can give you some numbers to call for getting a computer lined up for you, and can explain all the class choices. They are really sweet people running it, and all of the teachers are great. It was featured on NBC a couple of months ago, and they are winning all types of awards because they are really changing the dynamics of school. Good luck, and remember that you will get through.

My children are in it, and love it. They are thirteen and are already taking Spanish as a college and high school credit. They will graduate at 16 with an AA degree!! They also get to work at their own pace, and the courses are great, with interactive and different type lessons that are designed to be fast yet still provide wonderful insight.

A GED is a wonderful way to help your parents but make sure with your school that if u fail the GED that u can return. One thing u need to realize is the GED has allot of writing in it to pass. Like they ask u to do a paragraph on what is your favorite hobby and y? So u might want to go to your English teacher and get some help there. It looks like u might need it. Good luck!

You can't get a job these days without a specialized college degree. A GED will get you nowhere, just like having a high school diploma. Your parents want what's best for you. Stay in school and make something of yourself. The military won't even take you without a high school diploma these days.

People don't take GED as serious or respect them as much a diploma. By people I mean future employers and colleges. That should only be an option if your an adult that had dropped out in there past and realize the trouble they got themselves into.

Good. I personally have my GED and know several people who have their GED's and finding work has never been a problem for them or me. Also a lot of universities and colleges do accept GED's. The military also accepts GED's with 15 college credits.

There are organizations and agencies that can help with your situation. Although they are your parents and you should help them, it shouldn't be solely your responsibility. A GED is the equivalent to a high school diploma though.
