What do you mean crankin it up? Like starting the car? I usually stick my key in and turn it just to the position where the electrical stuff turns on but the engine doesn't crank. Then I can shift into neutral. You can also just take your foot off the gas while your moving and push the stick into neutral. You don't need to brake either. Then you can turn the car to the electrical position again and your flying at 50 mph without the engine running. You can start the engine at any time even if your moving. Just make sure it is in neutral or park or you can seriously damage your car

Hi jmotwg, yes, put your foot on the brake (this a safety feature a lot of cars will not shift out of park unless the brake is engaged) and shift it into neutral, you might need the key if the steering wheel is locked.

Most automatic cars have a safety feature that doesn't allow you to shift the gear without the key and your foot on the brake. You might have to turn the key to the ON position, step on the brake, and then shift to neutral.
