I'm not sure who interpreted it that way first but the Mayan calendar ends then. The general thought was because they were so smart they predicted the end of the world. Fun fact because of leap years being started after the Mayan calendar was made the world "ended" almost a year ago now

If they could predict the end of the world then why couldn't they predict the end of their civilization? Lol

It was all based on the myans or something like that which shows that the calendar they made only went up to 2012 which then comes to this myth that's it's the end of the world. :)

The Mayans of South America. Their celestial calendar runs in cycles. That date is the end of their concept of these cycles. Modern man has interpreted it to mean the end of the world. Maybe they just meant it was time to buy a new calendar. We shall see.

It was also predicted by the Oracle of Delphi, and Nostradamus as well, but the Mayan calender ends then. Also It's a bit confusing because of the fact that most of their books, tablets, and stone carving were destroyed by the Europeans. What if they destroyed something that went into the next Age? I'm just happy that I will be able to see The Hobbit before it all ends, J/K.

Also, their calender was more accurate then our for many, many years astronomically speaking, which says that there may be some sort of event that will occur around that time. I could explain that event if you'd like me to, so just ask okay:)

From what I found Nostradamus predicted the end of the world in 3062. And I have heard every 5,012 years or so there is a solar cycle the Mayans predicted, which is happening this year.

As I said, if she wanted some information about the astronomical aspect, she could request it from me. But thanks.

This myth is based from the unfinished Mayan calendar. Most people today respect the ancient Mayans for their many accomplishments! They were scientists before their time in many respects. One example is: they devoted themselves to astrology. As time went by, they were able to predict when certain comets would pass in a particular day, time of day and year. Also they learned the seasons changed due to the positioning of Earth in the solar system, while other civilizations were fixated on other things besides acquiring knowledge. Also the ancient Mayans made other predictions that came true- please research them! To make a long story short- the Mayan calendar stopped on 12/2012. Some people believe the Mayans purposely ended the calendar on 12/2012 because the world would come to an end on that date- LOL LOL, it's not true! They simply could not finish what they started because the Europeans came and took over their lands! The Europeans disagreed with the Mayans' sacrificial practices and took over to somewhat moralize them. It seems that some people have more faith in the Mayans besides God!!! Read your bible: the end will come like a thief in the night and no other will know of this day accept God and Jesus.... The words differ in the bible of course but I interpreted the message clearly- No one will know of this day except our Lord and Savior, no man, no Mayans!

No man knows the day nor the hour.

It's December 21st 2012. The belief mainly comes from the Mayan calendar ending on this translated date as others stated. There have also been others who have predicted a great change. So some have interpreted the Mayan calendar to mean that the earth will be no longer as it was and will change. Change how?..I don't know, but will not end.
