Running your a/c at a higher temperature and running fans WILL use LESS electricity than having your a/c run more frequently to maintain a lower temperature setting. Yes, it only takes a set amount of electricity to run an air conditioner, but for that a/c to maintain a lower temp, it has to run more frequently, and for longer periods at a time.
You need to realize that the wattage given on your air conditioner is the maximum the appliance can use regardless of the setting. So, if you do the math, you might be best off running your air con rather than 3 or 4 fans, or vice versa depending on their respective wattages.
It depends on several factors. How high are you running the a/c, how well insulated is your house, what is the ambient temperature... Comparing an a/c set to 68 with a few box fans is hardly an even comparison. The fans would never get that cool. remember that the cooler the a/c has to make your house, the more energy it's gonna take.
