i think you need to jack up the car on that side a see if the tire - wheel and hub is lose by shaking it and if it shakes or shimmies then you need a wheel bearing - now if this is what it is you can very well end up with only 3 wheels and tires cause left unfixed this is what happens - and it is on the front where you cannot really steer with only one wheel - get it checked out by someone who knows - wear out indicators on the brakes - it is time for new ones - or it is falling apart
this could also be from the sheet metal dust shield that some cars have around the disc brake parts. apply light pressure to the brake pedal and listen to the noise level. if it goes down then odds that there is something wrong with tire are lower. also listen to any sound difference when you turn sharply left our right. if it goes clackety clack then you might have a bad CV joint.
you didn't. state if this car is front wheel drive, could be the c.v. joint wheel bearings or just a rock in the dust shield, but further inspection is needed-FAST. that grinding is usually the sound of a component failure. if you've. got auto repair abilities, good, if not get to a technician a.s.a.p.
