What verse in the bible does it say or mean everything happens for a reason?

Report as

The verse in the bible that says everything happens for a reason is Romans 8:28. It says that "All things work together for good to them that love the lord, to them who are called according to God's purpose". This means that there is a root to every happening in our lives, it is not coincidence.

Can I just say that I don't think you know how to comprehend what you read. The bible verse that you refer to means If you love the Lord all things work together for good. It doesnt say good to who. A child that dies, it is not good for the child but it might be good for someone else. Maybe when the child would have grown up he would have been a mass murderer. I'm just saying.

Romans 8:28 says it if you take it out of context.

I am a cross country truck driver and have also spent years as a fireman. I love it when people say that in light of all of the genocide in the world, accidents where innocent children are ground to hamburger or burned alive, or beaten to death by bad people. Or perhaps the 4 year old I read about last night who was raped constantly for a few months by her step father.

One must be completely blind or just insane to say that everything happens for a reason. So my "Answer" is that simply, no, the Bible does not say that, although even if it did, the Bible is full of contradictions and stuff ordinary men wrote to explain the unexplainable or to to make OK their hatred and bigotry and desire to go kill every man woman and child in the surrounding villages.

I often find myself saying "everything happens for a reason", but more often than not, for good things. I appreciate your second paragraph regarding contradictions & ordinary men. You could not be more correct on that... I've recently entered the lives of the major bible thumpers and the contradictions, judgement and double standards run wild like I've never seen.

The disciples were just like us, but God picked the 12 of them for a reason. Jesus picked Judas Iscariot for a reason, right? If Jesus didn't pick Judas, then the prophecy would not have been fulfilled.

You know, you could think of it as an arrow. Things like genocide, children being burned and raped, they all happen. An arrow can only be shot by pulling it back. These things might pull you back, but when you release them, it'll launch yourself into the unimaginable like starting a fund for families of victims or reaching out to kids and teens and telling them the dangers of not speaking out to an adult or authority. You have to think of these things from other perspectives sometimes. The bible says that things happen for a reason, so why not make the best out of a horrible situation.

In Ecclesiastes 9:11, the wise man Solomon, with God's guiding hand, tells us, "The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to men of understanding, nor favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all. For man also does not know his time; like fish taken in a cruel net, like birds caught in a snare, so the sons of men are snared in an evil time, when it falls suddenly upon them." Thus we learn that things happen, evil happens. And it isn't always God making things happen. We learn here that sometimes we are "just in the wrong place at the wrong time." For example, a tornado hits a neighborhood; 10 people are killed. Are they all bad, are they all good? Did God do this? The Bible tells us that this is not the case. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 5:45, the Father "makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust."

If everything happened for a reason what is life's purpose , i do believe in God which everyone in favour of the saying must also . If we are all born to act out a predetermined play, then all motivation to become the best your potential offers is non existent . There is no point in life if we are all slaves to a predetermined destiny , why would god of created this beautiful world if he already knew what was going to happen , we were created to test our faith in him , and donate our best to the benefit of mankind and all his creations, everything does not happen for a reason , if so why did Joseph fritzel rape his daughter and have kid with her , and rape her for well over a decade . i am 18 and i am fascinated by a lot of questions in life , but to not be in control of my own life and destiny , is my deepest fear , that when i dig to the deepest sight of my soul to achieve something , that might never be enough because of the Almighty plan.

Jamie, life's purpose is to bring people to Christ. We are not slaves. We are followers and disciples of Christ. God created us to have a chance and show Him love. I am positive there are more reasons why He created us. Everything happens for a reason. If there was not a reason, then it wouldn't happen. Joseph fritzel's actions were for a reason. God intended for that baby to be born, otherwise it wouldn't have been born. My teacher's friend was raped and got pregnant and had a baby. The friend put the baby in an orphanage and got adopted by a young couple. The couple could not have a baby of their own, so adopted this one. Now both the couple and the child could not be more happier. God gave that baby to that couple for a reason. Jamie, if you are on the path that leads to God you don't need to worry. But if you are not on the path that leads to God, then that's when you should be scared.

There is no verse in the Bible that expresses "everything happens for a reason". The often misquoted text is from Romans 8:28, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

The verse does not tell us that what we do or whatever happens, happens for a reason. It literally says that God works through all things, good and bad, to benefit those who love Him.

I hope this helps someone. For complete thought on this read Romans chapter 8
