It's a diaphragm contraction I THINK it happens when you drink or eat carbonated things like soda. I would take a spoon full of sugar and put it on the back of your tongue but different methods work for different people
You get then because your brain isn't getting enough oxygen, and If you get a glass of water, and hold your breath as long as you can and then quickly drink the water:) hope I helped! And good luck getting rid of them:)
This actually works: when you have hiccups you get a sip of water and keep it in your mouth and bend over and then swallow! It will go away asap! And you get the hiccups by drinking or eating to fast or swallowing a big breath of air

I don't really know how you get them but you drink from a water bottle with your back bending and your head pointing forward. I'm sorry if these are bad directions, but if you do understand what I'm saying, then I'm telling you, it works!
Why do we hic-hic-hiccup? What causes 'em? Here's some general information about hiccups that you might not know. The Hiccup Down Low When you hiccup, your diaphragm and nearby muscles convulse, causing you to briefly gulp air. Within 35 milliseconds, the glottis (the opening at the top of the air passage) slams shut, producing that familiar sound of the "hic." Some of us talented people can cure the hiccups right away, but if you hiccup more than seven times you'd better settle in for a bumpy ride. Once started, you'll usually hiccup 63 times or more. Maybe a lot more. Poor Charles Osborne had the hiccups for 69 years! What Causes Them?
Hiccups are usually a reaction to your stomach and digestive system getting wonky. This happens when you eat too much, drink bubbly drinks like soda, or swallow too much air. Some people get the hiccups for no reason at all. Other things that cause hiccups include skull fracture, epilepsy, tuberculosis and believe it or not, constipation (not being able to poop). Common Cures for the Hiccups
Unlike sneezing, farting, burping, etc., hiccups don't serve any purpose. They're just annoying and pointless! So how do you get rid of hiccups? Which remedy works best? Home remedies are usually based on the idea that you have to disrupt the hiccup cycle. Remedies include holding your breath, breathing into a bag, pulling your tongue, sudden fright, or - get this - eating sugar. Just drinking water, if done soon enough, might wash down a chunk of food in the throat that's pressing against a nerve.
If these fail, a doctor could prescribe the drug chlorpromazine, tickle the pharynx with a hollow flexible tube through the nose, or use hypnosis or acupuncture. Not doing the trick? You could use extreme measures. In 1833, it was recommended that you blister or burn the skin above the phrenic nerve on the neck and back.
there are many cures for a hiccup. I was told (note I was told) that trapped air after eating or drinking certain foods creates it. The air, trying to escape, triggers hiccups. Here are some of mine, my dads, and friends remedies:
Have someone hold your ears, and drink a FULL glass of water. Sometimes I plug my nose while drinking and someone covering my ears. Or, if you have no one to help you, I get a straw or something and drink while covering my own ears.
This one is kinda weird. But it works for me (only sometimes, varies on how bad the hiccup is) and I made it up after all else failed. First, hold your breath for about 30-40 seconds while you lay down on your stomach, and bend your upper body towards the ceiling, (your head tilted upward) and it may work. Don't ask how it did, but it worked for me. Was a great stretching pose too lol.
Here's another one: take a couple of sips of flavoured water (or apple juice or some non carbonated water) and hold your breath for 30 seconds. Then take a couple more sips. Then repeat.
Here's one more: This is the second to last one I use, the last resort is the stretch tactic lol. I hunch over and take deep breaths. Then hold my breath for a couple of seconds, and slowly exhale. Then repeat.
I really hope at least one of these tactics work for you. I've heard of some other strange ways to get rid of the horrible hiccups. And I hope the other comments help you too. As we all know too well... Hiccups, suck, plain and simple!
Hi-cups are generally a healthy sign for children especially infants. But a serious symptoms for the old. hiccups are triggered when body looses too much of water. And more often than not, when people drink more alcohol the spirit absorbs all the water from the stomach to get itself diluted so as to get easily digested by the help of liver. When the person drinks more alcohol with out properly diluted he may get a bout of hiccups. hiccups are strains signs generated by the diaphragm ( the thin sheath separates the chest and the abdomen) of our body, this organ give signs to drink water. This also get flared up when we consume large amount of pepper or chilly. To void and control hiccups first advise is to drink sufficient cold water to cool the diaphragm, can consume 2 to 3 table spoons of sugar, can help you. Since it is difficult to tolerate the hiccups for more than an hour, your family doctor can advise you and find reasons for this strange symptom. Common drug used for a symptomatic treatment is STEMETIL.
