What causes nightmares?

Lately while I have been sleeping, I have been getting scary nightmares. What causes them? Is there a way to prevent it?

A nightmare can be caused by anxiety and depression or sleep deprivation. Another cause of nightmare is eating before going to sleep, which triggers an increase in the body's metabolism as well as brain activity. Read more on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightmare.

If you want to prevent them you should try thinking positively before you go to bed. Think about something you like, something really nice.

Anxiety formed from paranoia. or when you eat certain foods the paticles spread to every cell in your body and to you brain cells when the particles get to your brain cells they cause altered memories. when sometimes when people have dreams they have a dream about something that is going to happen i beleive that someday they will be able to use this for millitary purposes such as knowing wher a crime is going to take place or wher to evacuate before a bombing takes place. To keep from having nightmares watch what you eat before going to bed, no spicey foods, try to think of something nice and happy as you are going to sleep, try to let go of guilt wich is a huge cause, come clean if your guilty of something, (a death of someone you know is also a cause as well as watching a scary movie) and facing your fears helps alot.

Dreams usually are interpretations of things that you need to do, forgot to do and sometimes will do before it happens. There is a part of the brain which some religious people refer to be your "higher self". This Higher Self is a part of the brain we all have access too, it stores everything we taste, smell, hear, see, learn and feel permanently. -- This is why some people can "Tell the future", because their higher self accumulated all of their current life's aspects and gave them an answer.

Your brain is trying to tell you to pay attention even in your sleep!

Generally nightmares mean you forgot something very important, and you need to wake up now.. because your higher self calculated it will be very bad for your future if you don't.

I think the answer depends on the definition. I am retired and I sometimes dream that I am back at work and the problem solving associated with work. To me that is a nightmare..

Dreams are caused by recently thinking or remembering something. You can prevent a nightmare by not watching scary movies before bed, listening to scary stories, etc.

Your dreams come from what you think about during the day so if you wake up thinking about the nightmare or you lay in bed thinking about it you will most likely have another. Dreams are all your thoughts in a big blender and swirled together... Hope this helps just think about something else before going to bed or read that might help thumbs up if you like my answer!

well your nightmares come from a spore inside your brain that brings you into the dream realm thus, the spore, targeting your memory for things you remember and our going to your voice in your head by either having it make a monster or it might make a great dream for you. Mainly nightmares come from your memory (you saw something scary perhaps) but it will not normally go to your voice in your head if it is a nightmare.

A nightmare is an unpleasant dream that can cause a strong negative emotional response from the mind, typically fear or horror, but also despair, anxiety and great sadness. The dream may contain situations of danger, discomfort, psychological or physical terror. Sufferers usually awaken in a state of distress and may be unable to return to sleep for a prolonged period of time.Nightmares can have physical causes such as sleeping in an uncomfortable or awkward position, having a fever, or psychological causes such as stress and anxiety. Eating before going to sleep, which triggers an increase in the body's metabolism and brain activity, is a potential stimulus for nightmares.Recurrent nightmares that can interfere with sleeping patterns and cause insomnia may require medical help.

Often if you have been worrying about something (overdue school work, a horror movie you've seen, etc.) you will get a night mare. The way to prevent it is by praying that you wont have them and talking about your problems with somebody.

P.S

Just for fun, I'm gonna tell you this: MY DOG JUST TRIED TO CRAWL OVER MY SUNBURNED SHOULDERS!!! It hurt!!! Waa. Again, just for fun... But it's true!

It's caused by memories or other bad things in life, it just makes those moments in life seem worse or in a more worse scenario than when the moment actually happened.

Watching tv and shows that are bad or haunted. Your dreams are what your thinking of when you sleep. So if your thinking of something that scares you from tv or a show or even your fear it will cause a night mare. So Dont watch Halloween movies, haunted movie, scary movies, same with shows... EXPECIALLY any time before bed. So it will get out of your head thinking of scary things.

To have a nightmare you feel like something you watched is there and you attend to get afraid. Sometimes you feel like something is touching you when its not.

Nightmares are caused by the deep thoughts of your sleep. When you sleep you are just thinking, like you would do when your awake. Nightmares can be caused by many things. Such as a scary movie before you fall asleep, or something that you just think about. You are in control of your dreams. Studies are shown that most of the nightmares are caused by guilt, but then again, your mind could just think about something interesting to you while your sleeping.
