Isn't agnostic and atheist the same thing really? Atheist point of view. There.
Report as
Then who created man
Report as
Agnosticism deals with knowledge.
Atheism deals with belief.
Report as
I see.
Report as
I didn't mix them up...what you read was correct, in my opinion anyway
Report as
Rmoran could you share your thoughts please?
Atheism can be
belief in no gods
Or
no belief in gods
:
Agnosticism is doubt in being able to prove the existence or nonexistence of gods. So it seems that a person can be atheist with no belief in gods and agnostic doubting the ability to "prove" the nonexistence of gods at the same time. That standard just seems silly to me because I can't "prove" the nonexistence of deified invisible pink unicorns either so would that mean I have to be agnostic concerning their existence or can I go ahead and be a deified invisible pink unicorn atheist.
Report as
Agnosticism in its original meaning is uncertainly in knowledge. Theists and atheists can be both agnostic. I know it could seem silly, but you might be surprised how many assert certainty in their belief (or non-belief) in god(s). Nowadays agnosticism is usually it's own religious label. I'm sure most of the reason is that the word "atheist" is a hugely demonized term. If you say you're an agnostic, everyone just nods silently. You bring that other a-word out though, prepare to lose your friends and family in some circles.

If it was easy to understand, we wouldn't need faith. Someday all things will become evident; until then it's up to each of us whether or not we want to believe in a creator, or believe that we are all the product of an accident.

The appointment went well... it was Thursday. She's setting me up with a specialty clinic, so we'll see how that goes. I just got my Rx filled a couple of hours ago... trying to prove to myself that I didn't need it was stupid to do over a weekend! But since I've been without it for a bit, I'm feeling a little froot loopy right now. Somehow, I got through the worst of the pain without anything to help; but then when I got that Rx in hand, I couldn't even wait a week to get it filled. I feel like a failure somehow, like if I were tougher, I could just put up with the pain.

I refuse to let the haters shut me up. To me, that is the worst kind of censorship. They want to pride themselves on being so liberal, but the truth is they're the narrowest-minded of all.

What it really boils down to, is then can't comprehend faith and rely on proof and answers for everything, which makes them not understand faith. But there is just a driving power of faith that is something more then even perfect knowledge sometimes.

Why is a difference of opinion "hateful", "abusive", "hypocritical", "narrow-minded" and "angry"?

Exactly. And I feel sorry for them, really I do. If I had to go through this life thinking that this is all there is, some days, quite frankly, it wouldn't be worth it.

Report as
@ strawberry-something I at least, haven't witnessed Christians do. I think it's just to justify what they do. And if Christians did do that, all that does is make them hypocrites. Which is why I call them hypocrites:)
Report as
Sometimes they are. I try not to carry that generalization over to everybody else though..
Report as
I try not to as well. I have friends who are non-believers... so clearly I don't believe that all non-believers are obstreperous, abrasive, narrow-minded, or just plain abusive. It's simply that there are a few who feel the need to weigh in on every question regarding religion and they get belligerent about it. They've yet to learn the art of disagreeing without becoming disagreeable.
Report as
@rmoran-accusing Christians of shoving their beliefs down your throat, like you have said to me they "supposedly" have done to you, and then turning around and telling someone their belief is wrong, which is YOUR belief, and shoving that down their throat, makes you a hypocrite. I see you answer more q's about religion then about science, something you profess to love. Piece of advice, live and let live. Why not? My belief isn't hurting you.
Report as
At least our beliefs aren't "shoved down their throats" like theirs are in our science classes in school.
Report as
@farmer-same. I have never shared anything with anyone that hasn't asked. And not all non believers are hateful or hypocritical, I agree. I am sometimes shy and nervous to share my beliefs when asked! But I know I shouldn't be.
Report as
Yes, Christians should not resort to the name calling and insults that others do. Yet, they feel free to accuse us of their own tactics.
Report as
Maybe you should reread the above comments, Strawberrygirl. It's not like I came out of the ceiling with this. I quoted words. All I wanted to do was point it out but it looks like I only made things worse.

Answering these types of questions candidly is like repeatedly slamming your finger in the car door.. eventually you realize that if you quit doing it, it will stop hurting. Thanks, ItalianCharmer. Having been a pharmacy tech, I hate even getting it filled because I know what the staff at the pharmacy probably thinks. But I pulled a really stupid move the other day which didn't help the pain matter any... with my eyesight sub-par from the MS, I didn't notice that the bath mat had slipped away from the tub when I got in. So you know what happened when I got out. Long story short, my ruptured discs that had fused themselves are now rubbing bone on bone again. I can actually hear it inside my head. Life is never boring, I tell you.

Couldn't agree more and that's comin from someone with BSN. Had A LOT of sc ience classes and it totally makes no sense that a 'big bang ' created life. Evolution fails to explain soooo many amazing miracles! My life before faith was dark. HE led me to where I am today because I finally turned to him for help. All we can do is pray for others to seek and find Him because their lives would be so much better!

I seriously don't understand how some people think life came from a big bang. That's almost like saying that an explosion in a copier room could produce a dictionary. The concept of God always being there is simply too much for our limited minds to comprehend. But there will be a day when all things are revealed to us. No one created God. And he certainty didn't create himself. some day we'll understand. Until then, we must abide in faith.

And how could the planets and the breath of life come from a boom that come from nothing? God was and he is, and has and will always be. We can know the truth. You just have to plant a seed in your heart and ponder and pray about it.
Alma 32:28 Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves? It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me. 29 Now behold, would not this increase your faith? I say unto you, Yea; nevertheless it hath not grown up to a perfect knowledge.
30 But behold, as the seed swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, then you must needs say that the seed is good; for behold it swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow. And now, behold, will not this strengthen your faith? Yea, it will strengthen your faith: for ye will say I know that this is a good seed; for behold it sprouteth and beginneth to grow. 31 And now, behold, are ye sure that this is a good seed? I say unto you, Yea; for every seed bringeth forth unto its own likeness. 32 Therefore, if a seed groweth it is good, but if it groweth not, behold it is not good, therefore it is cast away. 33 And now, behold, because ye have tried the experiment, and planted the seed, and it swelleth and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, ye must needs know that the seed is good.

Yea this is from a book, but you can apply this to Anything and find the truth. Books can hold truth.
Report as
....In that case, a science book can hold truth also.
...-_- Um, sorry..I know you are trying hard to explain..And I promise you, I'm not stupid..but I just..don't get it. Sorry for wasting your time.
Report as
Yes, not saying science is false. Science holds truth too. No, you're not stupid. It's ok.
Report as
We can only partially comprehend the notion of God's existence. To do so, we must use human concepts to speak of God: "without beginning or end"; "eternal"; 'infinite', etc. The Bible says that He has always existed: " ...even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God" (Psalm 90:2). And, "Your throne is established from of old; Thou art from everlasting" (Psalm 93:2). Quite simply, God has no beginning and no end. So, where did God come from? He didn't. He always was.
Report as
@strawberrygirl
That's my problem. No beginning and no end... Everlasting.. Always..was.. How? Why?..
I want to understand, ..but I just don't.
Report as
And someday we WILL understand. Our minds our too limited to understand all things now, or even comprehend. Take the universe for example, our minds are too limited to understand the sheer size of the universe, and how vast it is, and the innumerable stars.

One of the most asked questions in the world is, 'Where did God come from?' The answer, to us Christians, is that God has always been here. No one invented Him, or made him - this is very clear to those of us who have studied the nature of God. Your question should be, 'How did God create Himself?' He didn't create Himself, and He has always existed. Creation means to make something from nothing. To create something requires that the creator exist before the thing created. When a carpenter makes a table, for example, he exists before the table he makes. For God to create Himself, He would have to exist before Himself, which does not make any sense. God could not have been created by someone else, because then God's creator would be greater than God. And that does not make any sense because God is the Supreme (or highest) Being, and you cannot go any higher than the highest. When Moses asked God at the burning bush what His name was, He responded "I Am who I Am" which indicates that God is existence (or "being") itself.

Hope this helps! - ManOfKnowledge

So how did you manage to "study" the nature of God.
Report as
God's nature comes to us through Scripture, the Church, and Sacred Tradition. It is our role as Christians to read, study, and interpret the Bible, so that we may come closer to the almighty Being who is God.

You know, I try to make it a point to put these at the end of all my answers, planting that seed ;). Even with speaking to a proclaimed atheist, explaining that though they my not believe and what type of Christian would I be if I didn't ask for our Creator to bless them. For the most part even they say thanks. But you are the first to wish the Lord's blessings back on me. This means a lot, because these are more than just words to me; yet a small prayer asking for that. So, with all sincerity thank you :). (and God bless ;))

"In many cultures it is customary to answer that God created the universe out of nothing. But this is mere temporizing. If we wish courageously to pursue the question, we must, of course ask next where God comes from? And if we decide this to be unanswerable, why not save a step and conclude that the universe has always existed?"

Not what I meant. Never mind.
Report as
Oh, I thought you just had an epiphany. Lol
Report as
You related God as always existing, to needed to come from somewhere. Why wouldn't that apply to the universe? Why wouldn't that need to "come from somewhere" too?
Report as
The answer to God's origin is almost always "he's always existed". The quote suggests that you stop at what we know exists, the universe, and instead say that has always existed. It's the same logic, although Occam's Razor infinitely favors no God in this case.
You're saying the Universe needs a beginning, but you suddenly stop when we get to God. Why add the infinitely complex baggage on top of something we have a good explanation for (even if we didn't)?
Report as
By the way, your quote slaps theism in the face. I'm not sure why you brought it up.

Evolved human nature created God.
In particular humans evolving in complex family and tribal groups have made empathy a defining characteristic of what it means to be human. The definition of empathy by Edith Stein:" Empathy is the experience of foreign consciousness in general." offers the ability to have empathetic feeling with third person perspective. It is this natural characteristic of humanity that allows us to feel sure that someone is out there watching over us. Once empathy allows us to feel sure there is an external god, that god can be designed to fit any characteristics we decide are ideal. The characteristics of a particular god concept is unimportant to the question.

God was not created, He is the ultimate creator. God Is, always Has Been and always Will Be and no we humans can never fully understand that. He is almost completely beyond human understanding. He gives us glimpses in the Bible but that is all.
The Earth and universe werent random, tho. they were carefully planned to house Gods people and keep us engaged and entertained and, i believe, distracted in the case of unbelievers (since God would know all that was to happen on His earth and in His Universe.)
