Wow, most responses seem to be what the writer's favorite is. Wrong answer. The better answers are the ones that suggest getting a dog that suits your personality and your environment. Are you energetic or a couch potato? Are you patient enough to start with a puppy and train it, or do you need an adult dog that has some training already? Small dogs don't necessarily do well in small homes and the same for large dogs in large homes. Some of the smaller dogs, terriers in particular, are very energetic, and some larger breeds need less exercise to be happy. I'd encourage getting a mixed breed from a shelter; mixed breeds are often healthier and a shelter dog makes a wonderful, loving pet. Somehow, they seem to know they've been rescued. Shelters usually have a variety of sizes, personalities, colors, etc. available. And know that you're making a commitment to care for the dog for the rest of its life -- food, love, exercise, vet bills, scooping poop, grooming, and just being a responsible owner. Please don't leave your pet outside for hours and hours alone, or tied up, or allowed to run loose.
I agree with Kimkay because you have to get a dog just like you like if you like small things then go for a chihuahua if you like the winter then go for Alaskan huskeys if you like big dogs then for labs or retriever but it all depends on you and what do you like.
