My turtles climb on top of each other and cling on so I can't pull them apart. Does anyone know why they do this?

I rescued them 3 years ago when they were still babies and just recently notice this happening. I have tried to research it but no luck.

Lack of enough room can make turtles climb on one another as they compete for the basking space. So, one may try hard to remain on the other one to feel the higher temperatures from the heating bulb.

I have a 3 foot tank with one side filled with all rocks. And they are still very tiny. I will see what I can do to make more space. Hopefully that will help. Thank you
