What's the difference between "self-respect"and "egoism"?

Report as

areldee & priest_of_Anubis are correct in their answers but to expound on those, a person should have a healthy ego which is pretty much the same as having self-respect. If you don't have that then you need to do some soul searching, maybe even some therapy to find out why you think so little of yourself. Remember, no one can tell you that what you think and/or feel about things is wrong. They are your thoughts and feelings, not theirs.

In my opinion, self respect is a realistic idea of who you are. Egoism is feeling that you are superior to most other people.

Yes, I think you are almost right. Here is something for you to consider: Once a man know who he really is, he needs to accept himself, for what? He needs to do things to make him happy. But what if this man, for example, found finally he is anxcious for a lot of love or money to satisfy himself at anytime he wants. Then he may either respect his internal needs to grasp the love and money excessfully, or he may consider others and hold himself from gainning such things with painful feelings in his internal heart. In a word, If he respects himself, he may hurt others, if he is not an egoist, he may hurt himself. does it make any sense to you?

Self respect means you don't let others walk all over what you think. Egoism is when you think you can walk all over the beliefs of others because you believe that you're just that awesome.
