It's real and it's a definite danger. However, there are also legitimate relationships (even if it's just friendly) that take place as well.
Point being .. be cautious .. don't naive and definitely do NOT believe EVERYTHING this person tells you. Take it for what it is .. a possible gamble for your life.
Most importantly .. for your own safety ... Do not keep it a secret .. make sure that your parents and your friends know what is going on.
Keep in mind .. It's so easy to become a person who is very likable on line. Because, it's easier to say what you think someone wants to hear. On line relationships are notorious for not being "in your face honest" so to speak. It's much easier to manipulate people without having face to face contact. Anyone can tell you they are who they are not .. and it would be sooo easy for you to believe they are the person of your dreams...when if actuality they are your worst nightmare.

As long as you know the person and have seen their real photo. Some people use fake photos to determine how they want to look which they really dont look like that particular person in the photo. Always be careful and maybe you could skype. Talking back and forth with no pictures involved talkinga bout you love someone when you cant even see them and their across country I dont agree with that. Be careful use your brain and never meet them until you feel comfortable and you skype. Photos.. cant go off them because people hack peoples facebook and go on google and get pictures.
