What exactly do I have to do to get rid of or eliminate the threats on my computer, but not costing me anything?

The best way is to back up your files and reinstall windows. That's a huge pain and you will also need to reinstall the drivers for any hardware you have.

If you're willing to live with some risk, the major antivirus companies offer free tools to scan or clean your computer, but I've never used them before.

I did use AVG years ago, don't know if they're still good.

I use CCcleaner (not antivirus but still useful) (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner) to clear none useful memory hogging info and to clean/wipe drive space b/c windows never really deletes anything, it just puts it off to the side until windows needs the space and overwrites the space.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2372369,00.asp has some good suggestions. Just look for what program fits you best. Avast would be my suggestion.

I, and a lot of people I know, use AVG free. It does the job for me.
