Life is just amino acids being in the same place at the same time, somehow mixing together just right. People win the lottery....eventually. Our planet was just one of the lucky ones to win the 'life' lottery. There are as many as 500 billion galaxies out there. Let's use the 8 planets in our Solar System as the overall average. Then... multiply this number with the number of stars in the Milky Way: 580 million. This gives us a total of 4.6 billion planets in the galaxy. Now times that by the estimated 500 billion total galaxies.=2.3e+21 or 2,300,000,000,000,000,000,000
Assuming Earth is the only life bearing planet in the Milky Way, the odds of life are 1 in 4,600,000,000. By that rule there should be 500,000,000,000 (500bil) life bearing planets 'out there'.
