I hated them. You never know when they are coming. Right before you realize one is starting, your windows begin to rattle like when a big truck is rumbling by. Then you feel the floor jerk and you can hear things in your house creaking and falling. It stops after only about 30-45 seconds but it feels like it lasted over 15 minutes. I was in LA (Northridge) during the big 7.1 quake in January 1994. My house was damaged - the hot water heater broke it's strapping and fell, the bookcases all fell, first spraying books over the room. The 2 toilets popped off the floor and broke the porcelain. It was a nightmare. My son 's TV flew across the room, and would have n really hurt him if he hadn't been sleeping on my bed that night.
