How do I train my dog to stop chasing cats?
My dog is a 5 month-old German Shepherd female. She has been around cats since we brought her home. Our cat loves dogs and plays with them and loves when they chase her. But now we have 2 kittens and the dog is chasing them. She has chewed on the one pretty badly. We keep the kittens in the house when we are not at home, but they like to be outside. I let them out when I am home and my dog is out with them. She can be so nice to them, they will lay by her so I know they are not scared of her. But she still enjoys chasing them up trees or up the fence, tonight she was chewing on the same one that she did before. She has killed one kitten already. I am trying to keep the kittens safe by setting up a large 'safe area' on the porch that my dog cannot get into. But of course the yard and gardens are much more exciting for them. I strongly do not want to chain my dog up when I can't be watching her because that just seems unfair. I know many people would tell me to do that, but I want to TRAIN her to act differently, not just suppress the behavior. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
