An Alcohol is a scientific term in biochemistry for a hydroxyl (-OH) molecule bound to a Carbon atom. There are many kinds of alcohols. They are separated into groups based upon the hydroxyls as Monohydric alcohols and Polyhydric alcohols.

Of the Monohydic alcohols are Wood Alcohol (Methanol), Grain Alcohol (Ethanol), and Amyl Aclhol (Pentanol). It is Ethanol that you drink, made as a byproduct of brewing with yeasts.

So Alcohol is the scientific term. It is just that it is a generic term for many alcohols.
