My son gets sick every other weekend after visiting his dad, Is cigarette or weed smoke the cause?

My son goes to his dads house every other weekend. My husband and i have noticed that without fail every other weekend when he gets home from his dads he is sick. He stays at his dads all day saturday and half a day sunday (no over nights) and he gets sick on tuesday or wednesday with a cough, fever and wheezing. My son is 5 and has really bad asthma and I know that 4 years ago my ex husbands family smoked in the house. I believe his current girlfriend smokes but they claim its never around my son. Could cigarette smoke be the cause of this? Could it be the cause even if they havnt smoked in the house (doubtful) for 4 years? I also believe they smoke weed in the house but have no proof. My son is not allergic to pets or any thing else, the asthma is triggered everytime he gets sick.

If it is an asthma attack from the smoke it would not be on Tuesday or Wednesday it would be right then.So it is happening at the home he is in, which would be your home.Your ex husband could look at this problem by saying when he is with me he is ok but every time he goes home in 2 or 3 days he is sick.wondering what you are doing at your home.thinking maybe perhaps your smoking weed even tho you say you don't.Point I'm trying to make is asthma /colds/running noses just come when children:)It is not your fault or their fault:)Good luck,,,be glad he has a father who wants to see him.

Your son could be allergic to cigarette smoke, so if they do or don't smoke in the house, if he is around them when they are smoking, it could be triggering your sons allergies. A friend of mine is allergic to cigarette smoke, and sometimes if he just walks by someone who is smoking, it messes him up. Does your son take allergy meds? I'd take him to do the doctor if not, and let them know about your situation and see if they can get him on allergy medicine, it will help!

Sounds like you may be looking for a reason to not have the child around his father and his girlfriend even if this "issue" may be true.

that is absolutley not the issue. The best thing for my son is to be with his father and I have a decent relationship with my sons father, his family and girlfriend. i wanted to know if this could even be an issue for my son before bringing it up with his dad. im looking for health advice for my son not anything else. It was a simple question so I can figure out what to rule out.

I don't think its the smoke if it was he wouldn't get sick 3 days later. Take him to the doctor next time he gets sick maybe there is something else wrong

It could be smoke, but it could also be his diet, the activities he is involved in, other environmental issues (like a lawn, cleaning liquids used, dust, flowers, etc), or maybe he is just tired. It could be stress, I am sure this situation is not easy on the kid, especially if he comes home and you are angry at his father.

You said that he gets sick on Tuesday or Wednesday, is there something he does or eats Sunday afternoon or Monday after his visits?

The best thing you can do is get him checked out by a medical professional. You should also have a calm, non-acusitory discussion with your ex-husband about the issue to see if between you you can come up with a solution to the problem. The one and only concern here is the health of your child, not who is causing the problem.
