In the us, can two businesses have the same name?

for example, if there is a company with a registered name of healthwise, can I start a business with the name Health Wise?

Two different business entities cannot bear the same business name in the United States. This is simply because the trademarked business names can't be used with another company. However, if the business name is not trademarked then another business entity can use it but not in the same state. Visit the Corporation Commission is your locality for more inquiries.

There was a restaurant in Plano, Texas that was named Doughy Joey's but they had to change the name because someone already had that name. So based on my experience, no.
