How does a neck piercing stay in?

I was standing behind a woman while waiting to board a flight, and I noticed she had a stud in the nape of her neck. it wasn't a loop, or a barbell, it was just a diamond stud. how does this stay in, without falling right out? I'm just curious.

A neck piercing stays in because the stud used is pierced with a barbell, shaped like a staple with two 90 degree angles, one on either end. This kind of piercing is quite complicated and it is advisable that you get it done only by a skilled piercer.

It actually looked really good there, although it was kind of a weird place to have it.

That is weird. But I guess she likes being different.

It's very complicated...they put this barbell in first then attach the piercing. I was a bit confused myself! And like Janemoon said only a very skilled piercer can do that.
