The days of the week got their names from the Norse Gods - Monday is Mani's day, Tuesday is Tyr's day, Wednesday is (W)Odin's day, Thursday is Thor's day, and Friday is Frigg's day, and Sunday is Sunna's day. Saturday is the only exception - which is named after the Roman God Staturn.

...but only partly true. That's how the days of the week IN ENGLISH got their names, and you can thank Constantine's daddy for that one--and Constantine for keeping the calendar IN ENGLISH that way. In Europe, the days of the week were named for Roman gods.

Monday = Moon's Day, by the way.

Variations on the remainder:

Tiew rather than Tyr
Wodin rather than Odin
Fria rather than Frigg.

thanks again!

@Clara - Mani is the Moon God in Norse Mythology and the day is named after him. Also the forms I gave are the Old Norse versions, your versions are the Germanic spellings.

By the Greek gods... that's why some of the days in different languages may sound alike.
