I lost my car's pink slip. How should I get a new one?

I want to sell my car but cannot find the pink slip. Can I get a new one in DMV?

I notice from your profile that you live in San Francisco. Since you gave me such a great answer about insomnia I thought I'd go the extra mile for you and research this a bit. From searching on the California DMV web site I found the following page which speaks to everything from lost pink slip (title) to lost registration, license plates, etc.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/vr_info.htm

The form you'll need to fill out to get a duplicate title is the "Application for Duplicate Title (REG 227)" and is at the following URL (note: it's a PDF):
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg227.pdf

It will cost $18 and you need to sign the document and also have your lienholder sign it (if you have a loan). You can mail in the form or fill one out at your local DMV office.

If you have any questions, the phone number you'll want to call at the DMV is: 1-800-777-0133

Just got back from DMV. Your answer was very accurate. A small addition would be: In addition to $18 fee, DMV enforce you to pay all outstanding tickets before issuing a new pink slip.

LOL. How many tickets would that be? ;)

Great answer Michael!

Great helpful answer indeed. I printed the form, filled it out ahead of time, brought exact change and got it done in no time. If not for the silly parking ticket it was a smooth process.

do they give you the pink slip right away or do they have to mail it to you?

In order to obtain a new pink slip for you're car, you will need to file for a lost title in the state and county you reside in. There is more than likely a fee to get a new one and the price is different based on each state. I would advise calling the courthouse and they should be able to tell you the necessary steps to take. Good Luck!
